{"id":46874,"date":"2026-04-10T17:35:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T17:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46874"},"modified":"2026-04-10T17:35:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T17:35:09","slug":"taiwan-tracks-chinese-warships-and-warplanes-despite-beijings-peace-messaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46874","title":{"rendered":"Taiwan tracks Chinese warships and warplanes despite Beijing&#8217;s peace messaging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>TAIPEI, April 10 (Reuters) \u2013 Taiwanese officials are tracking what they view as a worrying <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/30\/world-news\/china-boasts-military-capabilities-near-taiwan-on-second-day-of-drills\/\">rise in Chinese naval activity and military pressure<\/a> against the island, even as \u200bBeijing presses a message of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/chinas-xi-meets-taiwan-opposition-leader-beijing-state-media-says-2026-04-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peace and cooperation<\/a>\u00a0in meetings with Taiwan\u2019s opposition leader.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s tactics are all the more unnerving for the Taipei government, given the \u200copposition continues to stymie a defense spending rise that Washington has pushed for. The buildup also comes at a time when the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/09\/world-news\/trump-says-us-military-will-stay-around-iran-until-tehran-complies-with-deal-or-else-shootin-starts\/\">US is focused on the\u00a0conflict in the Middle East<\/a>\u00a0and President Donald Trump is readying for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/trumps-trade-war-with-china-focus-ahead-may-summit-2026-04-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a May meeting<\/a>\u00a0with China\u2019s Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is continuously and persistently expanding its military capabilities, and the military threat it poses to us is becoming increasingly severe,\u201d Taiwan Defense Minister Wellington Koo told lawmakers on Thursday amid \u200banger among the ruling party over the decision by members of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/birds-not-missiles-should-fly-skies-taiwan-opposition-leader-says-china-2026-04-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to skip talks on stalled defense spending.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Taiwan\u2019s flag is lowered during a daily ceremony as China conducts \u201cJustice Mission 2025\u201d military drills around Taiwan, in Taipei, Taiwan, on Dec. 30, 2025.\u00a0 <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A giant screen shows a news report on China\u2019s \u201cJustice Mission 2025\u201d military drills around Taiwan, in Beijing, China, on Dec. 30, 2025. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Taiwan has to show its determination to defend itself to \u200bthe US and other like-minded partners, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the most frightening scenario is \u2014 if all of our international allies were to question whether \u2060we have such resolve, what would we face? I cannot imagine it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China views Taiwan as one of its provinces and has <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/24\/us-news\/china-preparing-to-win-a-war-on-taiwan-by-2027-new-pentagon-report-warns\/\">never renounced the use of force to bring the \u200bisland under its control<\/a>. Taiwan\u2019s government rejects Beijing\u2019s sovereignty claims and says only the island\u2019s people can decide their future.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Two Taiwanese security officials told Reuters that China has deployed nearly 100 \u200bnaval and coast guard vessels in and around the South and East China Seas this week. One official said China usually deploys around 50-60 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/31\/world-news\/taiwan-stays-on-high-alert-as-chinese-ships-pull-back-after-massive-drills\/\">ships in the region<\/a>, so the increase in the past weeks was \u201cvery rare,\u201d especially because this time of year is not usually busy for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/10\/world-news\/russia-iran-and-china-join-naval-drill-in-south-africa-as-tensions-with-us-rise-a-pawn-in-the-power-games\/\">Chinese naval drills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A second highlighted the timing of the increased presence, coming with Washington focused on Iran, and as Taiwan\u2019s opposition leader visits \u200bChina.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/chinas-xi-meets-taiwan-opposition-leader-beijing-state-media-says-2026-04-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meeting KMT chairwoman Cheng Li-wun<\/a> in Beijing on Friday, Xi said people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait want peace and cooperation, but added China will \u201cabsolutely not tolerate\u201d independence \u200bfor Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>The KMT says there is \u201cno connection whatsoever\u201d between Cheng\u2019s trip and government defense spending plans.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A \u2018NEW NORMAL\u2019 FROM CHINA?<\/h2>\n<p>China\u2019s defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The number of vessels was corroborated \u200cby separate intelligence \u2060reports reviewed by Reuters, which showed a notable increase in Chinese vessels over the last few weeks, from nearly 70 at the end of March to nearly 100 this week.<\/p>\n<figure though said they viewed it as more of a \u201cnew normal\u201d from China rather than an alarming anomaly.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters was not able to independently verify the numbers of the Chinese ships around the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s daily military activities around the island have been maintained during Cheng\u2019s visit to China.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/04\/world-news\/china-teases-futuristic-star-wars-space-warship-that-would-deploy-jets-missiles-2\/\">Chinese military aircraft <\/a>\u200boperating around the island in the previous \u200b24 hours, as well as seven warships.<\/p>\n<p>Kuan \u2060Bi-ling, head of Taiwan\u2019s Ocean Affairs Council, which runs the coast guard, this week took the unusual step of posting on her Facebook account the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/taiwan-opposition-chief-leaves-china-peace-mission-minister-details-warship-2026-04-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">locations and names<\/a> of the Chinese warships in waters around the island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the leader of the main opposition party is planning to meet \u200bwith Chinese leadership \u2026 it is necessary to appropriately disclose to the public and the international community the situation of China\u2019s harassment in \u200bour waters, so that \u2060our people are informed and understand the serious implications,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018RESERVED\u2019 AIRSPACE OFF CHINA\u2019S EAST COAST<\/h2>\n<p>Added to the naval activity, China has also declared \u201creserved\u201d airspace off its eastern coast, running from March 27 to May 5 \u2014 which is around a week before <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/16\/us-news\/why-trumps-highly-anticipated-china-meeting-with-xi-might-be-postponed\/\">Trump is due to visit China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure such notifications defining a block of airspace \u2060as off-limits \u200bto civilian or foreign aircraft ahead of military drills.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters in Taipei on Wednesday, Tsai Ming-yen, head \u200bof Taiwan\u2019s National Security Bureau, said he believed China was using this to test how often US aircraft operate in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may also be politically intended to demonstrate the state of US air activity in the Indo-Pacific region \u200bprior to the Trump-Xi meeting,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a
