{"id":46969,"date":"2026-04-10T19:57:04","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T19:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46969"},"modified":"2026-04-10T19:57:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T19:57:04","slug":"ugandan-chimps-in-midst-of-first-recorded-ape-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=46969","title":{"rendered":"Ugandan chimps in midst of first recorded ape &#8216;civil war&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>They\u2019re going apes\u2013t.<\/p>\n<p>A scenic Ugandan jungle has become a bloody battlefield as two rival chimpanzee clans wage what could be the first recorded primate \u201ccivil war.\u201d The ongoing simian conflict was detailed in a study published April 9 in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adz4944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cChimps from one group began attacking and killing those from the other group and that turned into an escalated period of lethal violence,\u201d study author Aaron Sandel, an anthropologist at the University of Texas at Austin, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/primates\/chimpanzees-in-uganda-are-locked-in-a-deadly-civil-war-after-their-group-split-apart-and-scientists-dont-know-why\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Livescience.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the late great primatologist Jane Goodall had reported of a similar \u201cfissure\u201d 50 years ago, this marked the first time that such an intra-tribal schism had been researched and documented as it occurred, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/science\/article\/chimpanzee-group-splits-bloody-civil-war-59dk6swzr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Times reported.<\/a> Although chimp communities often compete with neighbors over land and resources.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Two adult male members of the Ngogo chimpanzee group band together and chase away rivals. \u201cWhat followed was a series of lethal attacks by the western group on members of the central group,\u201d the researchers wrote. \u201cThese raids resulted in multiple killings of adult males and, beginning in 2021, expanded to frequent infanticide, averaging several deaths per year.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">via REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sandel and his team had been researching the Ngogo chimpanzee community\u00a0of Uganda\u2019s Kibale National Park, a large and well-known group of primates that has been extensively studied for 30 years.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Comprised of over 200 members, the ape clan appeared fairly tight-knit aside from a few \u201cclusters\u201d and subgroups that existed within the troop.<\/p>\n<p>However, between 1998 and 2014, a noticeable rift sprang up as disparate cliques formed, including a gang of three males.<\/p>\n<p>By 2015, the formerly cohesive community had split into two clans that lived and reproduced separately with the aforementioned trio presiding over one of them.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s yet unclear what caused the schism. However, the researchers postulated that several adult males who acted as ambassadors between different factions died, leading to strained relations and a \u201cchange in the male dominance hierarchy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>James Brooks, an evolutionary anthropologist at the German Primate Center in G\u00f6ttingen who wasn\u2019t involved in the study, postulated that there weren\u2019t enough resources to sustain such an unusually group, which notably boasted 30 males.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Central male Morton (left) and Western male Garrison (right). <span class=\"credit\">John Mitani \/ SWNS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By 2018, ties had fractured completely and, like with every group from the Mongols to the Mexican cartels, these splinter factions began vying for primacy. <\/p>\n<p>They even occupied separate territories, similar to gangs presiding over turf.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Adult male chimps from one group attack a rival male. <span class=\"credit\">via REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhat followed was a series of lethal attacks by the western group on members of the central group,\u201d the researchers wrote. \u201cThese raids resulted in multiple killings of adult males and, beginning in 2021, expanded to frequent infanticide, averaging several deaths per year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dead young were often eaten, per the study. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s yet unclear how the apes dispatched one another, but chimps typically beat each other to death and tear at flesh with their teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Chimps who had been pals in the halcyon days turned on each other after the split. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s especially striking is that the chimpanzees are killing former group members,\u201d said Sandel, who  said that the conflict is ongoing with attacks as recent as this year.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the researcher was reticent about labeling the spat a \u201ccivil war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCivil war means something very specific when we talk about humans, and chimps don\u2019t have nations and things like that, but there\u2019s an important conceptual point when thinking about war against strangers versus civil war,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are chimps that know each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Brooks believes the somewhat anthropomorphic term is apt and even helps shed light on how division can lead to bloodshed in \u201chuman societies\u201d as well.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/10\/science\/ugandan-chimps-in-midst-of-first-recorded-ape-civil-war\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They\u2019re going apes\u2013t.
