taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Taxes <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/07\/lifestyle\/tax-expert-reveals-the-5-mistakes-taxpayers-make-when-filing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are due April 15<\/a>, but if you\u2019re filing by mail, the necessary deadline could actually be as early as April 9, thanks to a little-known switch at the USPS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/deadlines-and-extensions\/tax-return-postmark-date\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax experts warn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/statements\/010226-postmarking-myths-and-facts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mail service said<\/a> that its transportation operations have changed, so some mail might not arrive at processing facilities the same day it\u2019s mailed out.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button button--modal-trigger\" aria-label=\"Open the image in a modal.\" data-modal-image=\"39048529\"><br \/>\n\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-plus\" fill=\"#fff\" viewbox=\"0 0 facilities, the date won\u2019t necessarily match the date that the customer\u2019s mail was collected by a letter carrier or dropped off at a retail location.<\/p>\n<p>The staggering amount of mail handled in processing can lead to the date of acceptance by the USPS differing from the postmark date \u2014 and the latter could be later than expected.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>While the USPS changes are meant to improve at limited post offices, they might also have unintended consequences for taxpayers who file by mail, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov\/news\/nta-blog\/new-u-s-postal-service-rules-could-affect-whether-your-tax-filing-is-considered-on-time\/2026\/04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS)<\/a>, an independent organization within the IRS that serves taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>If your tax return doesn\u2019t have a postmark of April 15 or earlier, the IRS will count the tax return and any payments made as late \u2014 and that can trigger penalties and interest on any amount you might owe.<\/p>\n<p>One in five taxpayers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2022\/urban-rural-populations.html#:~:text=29%2C%202022%20%E2%80%94%20The%20nation%27s%20urban,2010%20to%2020.0%25%20in%202020.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lives in a rural area<\/a>, where it is more likely that postmark dates will be affected by the change, TAS noted.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter you\u2019re close to a filing deadline, it\u2019s advised not to rely on a mailbox alone. One way to ensure the postmark date is the same as your date of mailing is by using an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/filing\/private-delivery-services-pds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">authorized private delivery service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Several options exist to make sure a postmark date is the same as a mailing date \u2014 with documentation to prove it.<\/p>\n<p>Taxpayers can go to a USPS counter directly and use certified mail, registered mail or postage validation imprint, which is a special marking indicating postage paid and date accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Those options provide proof of mailing, which can protect you if there\u2019s ever a case where you\u2019re questioned about whether you filed on time.<\/p>\n<p>If the required postage is already on the envelope and not purchased at the time of mailing, customers can request a manual postmark at any post office for free to ensure it reflects the mailing date.
