{"id":47254,"date":"2026-04-11T03:13:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T03:13:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=47254"},"modified":"2026-04-11T03:13:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T03:13:35","slug":"we-thought-beirut-was-going-to-collapse-recounting-the-deadliest-day-of-the-war-with-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=47254","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We thought Beirut was going to collapse\u2019: recounting the deadliest day of the war with Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Soha Bsat is still trying to make sense of what happened.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/israel\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\">Israel<\/a> bombarded the Lebanese capital of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/beirut\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\">Beirut<\/a> on Wednesday, Bsat \u2013 like many others \u2013 was traumatised by the sudden and intense onslaught of violence unleashed on the city where she lives.\u00a0\u201cWe thought all of Beirut was going to collapse on our heads,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Bsat, a 55-year-old lawyer, was at her office in the residential neighbourhood of Ramlet al-Bayda. She believed the area \u2013 which is close to the residence of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri \u2013 was safe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first explosion rang out just 50\u00a0metres\u00a0away from her office. It was followed by a second, a third and a fourth. &#8220;It was all around us. We could see black smoke everywhere through the windows. When we turned on the television, it was chaos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u00a0later said that it bombed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/lebanon\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\">Lebanon<\/a> more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Eo9Yc4CruCg\" target=\"_blank\">100 times\u00a0in less than 10 minutes<\/a>. Several civilian areas in the heart of Beirut were targeted. The strikes occurred just 48 hours after Tehran and Washington called a ceasefire, when\u00a0many in the country believed they were safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\"><span class=\"a-read-more__label\">Read more<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/middle-east\/20260409-sidelined-trump-ceasefire-iran-israel-pummels-lebanon-agrees-talks-netanyahu\" target=\"_self\" class=\"a-read-more__link\">Sidelined by Trump\u2019s truce with Iran, Israel pummels Lebanon \u2013 then agrees to talks<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Scenes of chaos<\/h2>\n<p>A few streets away,\u00a022-year-old\u00a0student\u00a0Dana Sabeh Ayoun experienced a similar shock. At around\u00a02:15pm she heard\u00a0the sound of missiles whistling overhead.\u00a0&#8220;Then the strikes came. It was very\u00a0loud; I\u00a0didn&#8217;t understand what was happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0could see a thick column of smoke rise into the sky from her family&#8217;s apartment near Beirut\u2019s Corniche el-Mazraa neighbourhood. She filmed the scene from her balcony and immediately called her father, in tears.\u00a0&#8220;I was so scared.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dana\u2019s father, Saed Sabeh Ayoun, tried to reassure her on the other end of the line. He was in the suburbs of Dora, northeast of Beirut. &#8220;It was chaotic. I could hear my daughter crying; she was in shock. I was very\u00a0worried &#8230;\u00a0I waited for things to calm down before going home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Lebanese authorities called on residents to clear the traffic-clogged roads and allow much-needed ambulances to circulate in the city. Israel bombed Lebanon in the middle of the day, when people were at work and schools, as residents went about what they thought was a regular day. Beirut was\u00a0already teeming with displaced people who had fled the southern parts of the country, where\u00a0Hezbollah\u00a0strongholds were regularly targeted by Israel.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief\u00a0lull, Bsat decided to make her\u00a0way back to the Tallet el-Khayat neighbourhood where she lived. Bsat said the announcement came as a\u00a0shock.\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s a very residential neighbourhood. We weren&#8217;t expecting this at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Locals were worried that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/hezbollah\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\">Hezbollah<\/a> members were\u00a0infiltrating areas\u00a0that were previously considered\u00a0safe. Bsat says people are taking new precautions.\u00a0&#8220;We don&#8217;t let just anyone into the building anymore,&#8221; she says.\u00a0Residents\u00a0of her building even told their landlord not to rent out one of the apartments to a family they did not know, out of a new sense of fear.\u00a0\u201cWe do everything we can\u00a0&#8230; but you never know who&#8217;s in the neighbouring building.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the second wave of strikes in the early evening, Bsat decided\u00a0she had had\u00a0enough. She left her apartment, along with her family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t even take my ID. My daughter was crying, my husband too. We just left like that\u00a0\u2013\u00a0without changing our clothes, with just a little money.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She says dust choked the streets and black smoke filled the air. &#8220;I thought to myself: if the building collapses, so be it. If not, I&#8217;ll come back tomorrow.&#8221; She realised, like many others in Beirut, that no neighbourhood was off-limits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All we can do is pray. We want it to stop once and for\u00a0all.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>The\u00a0\u2018reflex of war\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Claude Abou Chedid, a professor at the ESA Business School in the Clemenceau district of Beirut, was in the university cafeteria when she heard the shrill whine of missiles. After\u00a0making sure everyone was uninjured,\u00a0Chedid and her colleagues checked on their families. At the time, she says, everyone managed to keep calm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0underneath her cool-headedness, Chedid was simmering with anger.\u00a0\u201cStrikes are normally preceded by a warning to prepare, flee, and protect oneself. But this time\u00a0\u2013\u00a0nothing.&#8221; She says the expectedness and intensity of the attacks reminded her of the horrors of the Beirut port explosion in 2020, which destroyed entire neighbourhoods of the capital.<\/p>\n<p>Some 75 kilometres away in southern Lebanon,\u00a0rescuers were caught in a race against time. &#8220;Everything was calm when suddenly, a lot of bombs and missiles started striking the area. We were surprised,&#8221;\u00a0says\u00a0Fayez Gaber, an ambulance driver in Nabatieh.<\/p>\n<p>Gaber and his team started working immediately to check on civilians. &#8220;There was a lot of damage and a lot of people who died.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He says the strikes were unusually relentless\u00a0\u2013\u00a0his team would barely finish\u00a0at\u00a0one site before they\u2019d have to rush to tend to another freshly hit location. \u201cUsually, it\u2019s four to six strikes a day or even less. It\u2019s never like this\u2026\u00a0it\u2019s not easy to witness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mona Abozeid, director of the Nabatieh Hospital, describes\u00a0an\u00a0&#8220;unimaginable&#8221; situation. In the span of a few hours, her facility received 37\u00a0wounded people and 10 bodies,\u00a0including two children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A 16-year-old girl has burns covering 50\u00a0percent\u00a0of her body. There was a\u00a07-year-old girl with gaping wounds in her face who was cold, crying, wailing\u00a0\u2013\u00a0calling out for her mum and dad.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bombs have continued to fall around us and rattle the walls of the hospital. Bodies continued to pour in. It was becoming increasingly clear that there was no safe place for the civilians of\u00a0Lebanon,\u201d Dinh says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vincent Gelot, director of the Lebanese wing of French non-profit \u0152uvre d&#8217;Orient, was also present in southern Lebanon at the time of the strikes.\u00a0He heard the explosions from the village of Qlayaa, south of the Litani River, during a religious ceremony. He says he felt the blasts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On his way back to Beirut, Gelot saw rows of cars driving away from the capital and plumes of smoke across the horizon. \u201cIt was a bloody\u00a0day, unacceptable.\u00a0No military argument can justify such bombings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two days after the strikes, rescue workers in Lebanon are still searching for bodies in the rubble in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon that were targeted\u00a0by Israel.\u00a0Residents are still reeling from the shock and worry\u00a0there will be\u00a0more unannounced bombings\u00a0in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\"><span class=\"a-read-more__label\">Read more<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/middle-east\/20260402-an-eye-for-an-eye-israel-death-penalty-law-is-retaliatory-and-electorally-motivated\" target=\"_self\" class=\"a-read-more__link\">&#8216;An eye for an eye&#8217;: Israel\u2019s death penalty law\u00a0is retaliatory and electorally motivated<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to leave Beirut for a while. We thought we were safe before, but I realise now that no one is,\u201d says\u00a0Ayoun, the young student.<\/p>\n<p>Bsat echoes that\u00a0sentiment and\u00a0says she\u2019s even considering leaving the\u00a0country. &#8220;If\u00a0this doesn&#8217;t end with complete peace, I won&#8217;t stay. We can&#8217;t live like this anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone has the option\u00a0of\u00a0leaving Lebanon for safer areas.\u00a0&#8220;My children and I have French passports, we have a\u00a0solution,&#8221; says Bsat.\u00a0&#8220;But many other people\u00a0\u2013\u00a0even members of my family\u00a0\u2013\u00a0don\u2019t have that choice. We just want to live.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The future is uncertain and frightening for many in Lebanon\u2019s wounded cities and towns.
