{"id":47712,"date":"2026-04-11T14:48:33","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T14:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=47712"},"modified":"2026-04-11T14:48:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T14:48:33","slug":"buffets-baristas-but-no-briefings-a-journalists-account-of-covering-islamabad-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=47712","title":{"rendered":"Buffets, baristas, but no briefings: A journalist\u2019s account of covering Islamabad Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/large\/2026\/04\/11192936b52ebbc.webp\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They came from around the world: hundreds of journalists rushed to Islamabad\u2019s flagship convention centre \u2014 converted into a media hub by Pakistani authorities for landmark talks between the United States and Iran to end the war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>But as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1990743\/direct-talks-being-held-between-us-iran-delegations-in-islamabad\">negotiations began<\/a> behind closed doors half a kilometre away, all the world\u2019s media could do was wait \u2014 and sip on an expertly brewed coffee while listening to live eastern folk music.<\/p>\n<p>Even the lattes had a tagline: \u201cBrewed for Peace.\u201d Branding was a big part of the event, with Pakistan dubbing the process the \u201cIslamabad Talks\u201d, and plastering a logo combining the Pakistani, US and Iranian flags all over the city.<\/p>\n<p>Early on Saturday, an overcast Islamabad felt like a ghost town, with almost no civilian traffic on its wide avenues. The few vehicles that moved were driven by armed, uniformed personnel who patrolled the city.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--left    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1990753\/in-pictures-iran-us-delegations-accorded-warm-welcome-upon-arrival-in-pakistan\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--newskitlink  \">    <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Some journalists, accredited by the information ministry, were nonetheless held up for about an hour at a checkpoint outside the venue as a convoy of VIPs swept past.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, they found lavish surroundings, wedding-banquet style spreads of <em>biryani<\/em>, <em>kebabs<\/em> and <em>gulab jamun<\/em>, along with gourmet coffee blended from Brazilian and Ethiopian beans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did the branding (\u2018Brewed for Peace\u2019) just for the day,\u201d one person manning the stall said.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the hall, musicians played folk songs on a small stage. \u201cI\u2019m a professional musician, and also teach music,\u201d Amir Hussain Khan, a sitar player, told <em>AFP.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"bored-out-of-my-mind\" href=\"#bored-out-of-my-mind\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a>\u2018Bored out of my mind\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Staff had reserved seating with a clear view of the massive main stage for US media, directing correspondents from other outlets elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian media went to the opposite side of the hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m bored out of my mind,\u201d one journalist told <em>AFP<\/em>, declining to be named.<\/p>\n<p>Another offered a similar assessment: \u201cThere\u2019s not much to do here.\u201d Updates did not begin to arrive until after about 2pm, hours after US Vice President JD Vance touched down in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>On the large screen dominating the cavernous Jinnah Convention Centre, state television aired footage of his arrival and reception by Pakistani officials, prominently including Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.<\/p>\n<p>When updates did come, they arrived not from media briefings \u2014 as would be the norm at an event of this scale \u2014 but from press statements released via WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign ministry said a \u201chigh-powered\u201d US delegation, led by Vance and including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, had been received by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who commended Washington\u2019s \u201ccommitment to achieving lasting regional and global peace\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--left    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ForeignOfficePk\/status\/2042858014663938286\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--twitter  \"><span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ForeignOfficePk\/status\/2042858014663938286\"><\/a>\n    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Hours later, the government said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1990743\/direct-talks-begin-between-us-iran-delegations-in-islamabad-state-media\">met <\/a>Vance, expressing hope the talks would serve as \u201ca stepping stone toward durable peace in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--left    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"youtube.com\/shorts\/wv2AOUO2cT4?source_ve_path=NzY3NTg&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dawn.com%2F\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--youtube_short  media__item--relative\">\n<div style=\"position: relative;aspect-ratio: 9 \/ 16;overflow: hidden;max-width: 360px;margin: auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Not exactly the kind of gripping, headline-grabbing quotes many of the journalists in the hall had flown thousands of miles for.<\/p>\n<p>The convention centre offered high-speed wireless internet that <em>AFP<\/em> clocked at more than 150 megabits per second, far above Pakistan\u2019s national average of 25 Mbps, according to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"http:\/\/Speedtest.net\">Speedtest.net<\/a> figures from February 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The gesture was not lost on reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey say they have facilitated the media. No doubt they have given 5G internet speeds,\u201d said journalist Nadir Guramani.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut media teams deputed inside Jinnah Convention Centre do not know what\u2019s happening outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Security measures added to the surreal atmosphere.
