From heart drugs to hair-loss treatments, here\u2019s a look at 10 common medications linked to an increased risk of gynecomastia. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>More than half of men in the US are affected by gynecomastia at some point in their lives. <span class=\"credit\">HENADZY \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spironolactone<\/h2>\n<p>A diuretic that helps the body remove excess fluid and sodium, spironolactone is commonly sold under the brand name Aldactone and is used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure and swelling linked to the heart, kidneys or liver.<\/p>\n<p>It can trigger gynecomastia by disrupting hormone balance, lowering the effects of testosterone, the main male sex hormone, and allowing estrogen, a hormone linked to female breast development, to have more influence in the body.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finasteride <\/h2>\n<p>This drug is commonly prescribed under brand names like Propecia for hair loss and Proscar for enlarged prostates, a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/13\/health\/im-a-doc-and-this-embarrassing-health-issue-is-actually-very-common\/\">common issue <\/a>in aging men.<\/p>\n<p>It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, a hormone strongly linked to prostate growth and hair loss.<\/p>\n<p>By lowering DHT, it can disrupt normal male hormone activity and, in some men, trigger chest enlargement linked to gynecomastia.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Anabolic Steroids<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Best known for their misuse by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/25\/im-a-bodybuilder-steroid-boils-left-me-scarred-housebound\/\">bodybuilders<\/a>, athletes and others chasing muscle gains, these synthetic versions of testosterone also have legitimate medical uses, including low testosterone, delayed puberty, and muscle wasting.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Drugs like anabolic steroids can throw off hormone balance in the body and stimulate male breast tissue growth. <span class=\"credit\">Dmytro Panchenko \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike drugs that reduce male hormones, anabolic steroids can flood the body with high levels of testosterone. Some of it can then be converted into estrogen, which may stimulate male breast development. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antipsychotics<\/h2>\n<p>These medications are used to treat conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Tourette\u2019s syndrome, and severe behavioral problems in children that don\u2019t respond to other treatments.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>One common drug, haloperidol, sold under the brand name Haldol, works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, helping rebalance a chemical that plays a key role in mood, behavior and thinking.<\/p>\n<p>But in some cases, that change can raise levels of prolactin, a hormone involved in breast development.
