On Sunday, he may be voted out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In the hours before polling stations opened up across Hungary, while candidates wrapped up last-minute campaigning in cities and villages spanning the\u00a0Hungarian plains, a sense of nervousness swept through the electorate ahead of what\u2019s being seen as a pivotal vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/hungarys-tisza-party-seen-winning-two-thirds-majority-parliament-median-2026-04-08\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Independent polls <\/u><\/a>have suggested that Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s Fidesz party could lose to the opposition party Tisza, which is led by <!-- -->P\u00e9ter Magyar, a one-time Fidesz loyalist-turned-challenger.<\/p>\n<p>Loyal supporters of Hungary\u2019s strongman fear an end to his 16-year-rule, while those who have been campaigning against him for years are worried a surge in opposition support still may not be enough to clench the two-thirds majority they covet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really scared &#8230; to be honest,&#8221; said 26-year-old Gergely L\u00e1z\u00e1r, who spoke to CBC News while attending a Tisza rally in the Hungarian town of \u00dajfeh\u00e9rt\u00f3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViktor Orb\u00e1n has been in his position for a very long time, and I don&#8217;t think it will be very easy to give up his power.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"imageMedia image full\">\n<div class=\"placeholder\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/ais\/59f6023a-81a2-4d1a-ab9a-92a145d2e5e5,1775940581701\/full\/max\/0\/default.jpg?im=Crop%2Crect%3D%280%2C0%2C1775%2C1148%29%3BResize%3D796\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"image-caption\">After 16 years as Hungary&#8217;s prime minister, Viktor Orb\u00e1n may face election defeat with polls suggesting the opposition Tisza party could secure a majority.<!-- --> <!-- -->(Benjamin Hall\/CBC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Long-time leader<\/h2>\n<p>Orb\u00e1n, who is the European Union\u2019s longest-serving prime minister, is a polarizing figure at home and abroad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His critics accuse him of creating an iron grip on the state by exerting control over the judiciary and the media, and enabling rampant corruption.<\/p>\n<p>But his self-described quest to create a so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/us-conservatives-watch-nervously-orban-faces-tough-test-hungary-vote-2026-03-31\/\" target=\"_blank\">illiberal democracy<\/a> in Hungary has earned him praise from the far right as well as some in the U.S. MAGA movement.<\/p>\n<p>Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s vision is for a democracy that is not bound by liberal norms, but that prioritizes family, country and what the state considers traditional values. He is standing in front of a sign that translates to &#8216;Now&#8217; with &#8216;Or never&#8217; crossed out.<!-- --> <!-- -->(Katie Pedersen\/CBC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>EU friction<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Billions of euros worth of funds have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/BRIE\/2023\/741581\/IPOL_BRI(2023)741581_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><u>frozen by the European Commission<\/u><\/a> because of concerns related to\u00a0 Hungary\u2019s democratic backsliding, including instances of corruption and lack of rights and freedoms for minority groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hungary, which is heavily reliant on Russian oil and gas, has repeatedly clashed with the EU over Ukraine, and Orb\u00e1n has repeatedly blocked or delayed aid and loans for Kyiv as well as sanction packages targeting Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Orb\u00e1n has accused Kyiv of not acting fast enough to repair the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/player\/play\/video\/9.7107534\" target=\"_blank\">Druzbha pipeline,<\/a> which Ukraine says was damaged in a Russian drone attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pipeline carries Russian oil to eastern and central Europe. It&#8217;s a message that seems to resonate with Fidesz supporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Listening in a crowd of hundreds waving Hungarian flags was 18 year-old Milan, who didn\u2019t provide his last name.<\/p>\n<p>He said that he believes that the current government has made Hungary a good place for young people.
