{"id":48510,"date":"2026-04-12T11:20:01","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T11:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=48510"},"modified":"2026-04-12T11:20:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T11:20:01","slug":"orthodox-easter-truce-obliterated-as-ukraine-and-russia-both-allege-violations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=48510","title":{"rendered":"Orthodox Easter truce obliterated as Ukraine and Russia both allege violations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A temporary weekend truce between Russia and Ukraine for Orthodox Easter quickly unraveled Saturday, with both sides accusing each other of attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Russia claimed Ukraine struck a gas station in the city of Lgov in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/26\/world-news\/russia-regains-control-of-kursk-from-ukraine-putin-says\/\">border region of Kursk<\/a>, injuring three people including a one-year-old child who was hit in the head by shrapnel, and the child\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The governor of Kursk in Russia posted these two images Saturday afternoon claiming a gas station was attacked. <span class=\"credit\">Telegram\/Alexander Khinshtein<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The gas station is in the city of Lgov in the border region of Kursk.  <span class=\"credit\">Telegram\/Alexander Khinshtein<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis cowardly strike by the enemy took place shortly after 4 p.m. \u2014 after the declared Easter ceasefire had already gone into effect,\u201d slammed Alexander Khinshtein, the governor of Russia\u2019s Kursk region, <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/Hinshtein\/17700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Telegram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt serves as stark proof that these Ukrainian subhumans hold nothing sacred.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Ukraine has not released an immediate statement about the claims, but Kyiv also slammed Moscow for breaching the Easter truce \u2014 something Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had been pushing for.<\/p>\n<p>Russia violated the ceasefire more than 400 times, firing drones and artillery, Ukraine\u2019s General Staff claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Combat also occurred along the frontlines.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The two sides had agreed to a 32-hour truce this weekend for Orthodox Easter. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe cease-fire is not being observed by the Russian side,\u201d said Serhii Kolesnychenko, a communications officer for Ukraine\u2019s 148th Separate Artillery Brigade.<\/p>\n<p>A similar truce also unraveled during Easter last year, when both sides accused the other of hundreds of violations.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, Zelensky had expressed hope that the weekend truce would lead to a more permanent peace.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The two sides managed to exchange 175 prisoners of war each on Saturday. <span class=\"credit\">via REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEaster should be a time of silence and safety. A ceasefire on Easter could also become the beginning of real movement toward peace \u2013 our side has made the corresponding proposal,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZelenskyyUa\/status\/2042891089493758321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zelensky wrote on X<\/a> Saturday morning, before the cease-fire was shattered.<\/p>\n<p>Russian strongman Vladimir Putin agreed Thursday to the 32-hour truce proposed by Zelensky a week earlier \u2013 and meant to last from 4 p.m. local time Saturday to midnight on Sunday \u2014 halting the four-year war temporarily.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Overnight into Saturday, before the truce took effect, Russia pummeled Ukraine, with the Odesa region hit hard. <span class=\"credit\">STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE\/HANDOUT\/EPA\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Moscow strikes killed four civilians and wounded at least 36 others overnight into Saturday \u2014 hours before the cease-fire was set to take effect \u2014 with the port region of Odesa badly hit.
