into old eating habits before starting the cycle over again, has often been linked to more weight gain.<\/p>\n<p>But new research has turned the belief that this much-criticized diet habit is bad for you on its head, finding it may not be as bad as once thought.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button button--modal-trigger\" aria-label=\"Open the image target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yo-yo dieting trap<\/a> that can even cause <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/19\/health\/new-study-explains-why-yo-yo-dieting-is-so-common\/\">fat cells to \u201cremember\u201d being overweight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A study published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12916-026-04663-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMC Medicine<\/a>, however, suggests that this eating pattern could actually build long-term health benefits, even when the weight eventually returns.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>This dieting pattern leads to more than just changes in weight; it can also affect body composition \u2014 especially visceral fat around the abdomen, which is closely linked to cardiovascular disease \u2014 and even genetic modifications.<\/p>\n<p>This led the research team to look into whether repeated diet efforts help or hurt long-term health, with their findings challenging the idea that weight loss success should be judged only by the scale.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image scans before and after each diet cycle to measure changes in body composition.<\/p>\n<p>Despite returning to nearly the same body weight before another dieting cycle, there were several metabolic improvements.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Visceral or abdominal fat distribution was better than at the start of a diet, as well as insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles improving.<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, these findings show a lasting \u201ccardiometabolic memory\u201d from previous weight loss attempts.<\/p>\n<p>Even five years after finishing a second diet intervention, participants had regained less weight and abdominal fat than those who only participated in a weight loss program once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepeated participation in a lifestyle program aimed at weight loss, even after an apparent \u2018failure,\u2019 in which an individual regains all the weight lost in a previous diet, may lead to significant and sustainable health benefits over the years, particularly through the reduction of harmful visceral fat,\u201d the study\u2019s principal investigator, Iris Shai, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/even-failed-diets-may-deliver-long-term-health-gains-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This research comes as the obesity epidemic continues to grow, as <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/28\/health\/nearly-half-of-american-adults-will-be-obese-by-2035-forecast\/\">nearly half of American adults will be obese by 2035<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And the health risks of carrying extra weight have been well-documented, raising the chances of developing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/04\/lifestyle\/61-of-us-adults-will-have-cardiovascular-disease-by-2050-report\/\">heart disease<\/a>, Type 2 diabetes,\u00a0<a
