The Indian singer Asha Bhosle<\/a>, whose voice defined Bollywood music through the 1970s and 80s, has died aged 92, her family said.<\/p>\n The two-time Grammy nominee had been admitted to hospital in Mumbai with complaints of \u201cextreme exhaustion\u201d and chest infection.<\/p>\n \u201cMy mother passed away today (Sunday). Her last rites will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai,\u201d her son Anand Bhosle told reporters.<\/p>\n Bhosle\u2019s voice resonated across a film-obsessed India<\/a> for nearly eight decades, during which she recorded more than 12,000 songs. She boldly embraced cabaret and western-influenced melodies to forge a distinctive musical identity.<\/p>\n India\u2019s prime minister, Narendra Modi<\/a>, said he was \u201cdeeply saddened\u201d by her death.<\/p>\n \u201cHer extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world,\u201d he said. \u201cShe will continue to inspire generations and her songs will forever echo in people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n Born on 8 September 1933 to a musical family, her four siblings also became accomplished singers and musicians. Her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, was a singer revered as \u201cIndia\u2019s nightingale\u201d.<\/p>\n But while often compared to Mangeshkar, who died in 2022, Bhosle walked her own path, embracing genres from pop to folk.<\/p>\n Her early life was marked by struggle, including a turbulent marriage at 16.<\/p>\n She became one of Indian cinema\u2019s most versatile and celebrated voices, receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2000 and two Grammy nominations.<\/p>\n Bhosle continued to collaborate with global artists well into her later years, including a recent track on the British virtual band Gorillaz\u2019s<\/a> album The Mountain<\/a>.<\/p>\n Beyond music, she nurtured her passion for food, launching the Asha\u2019s restaurant chain in Dubai and Britain.<\/p>\n
