{"id":48710,"date":"2026-04-12T16:25:02","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T16:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=48710"},"modified":"2026-04-12T16:25:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T16:25:02","slug":"how-the-us-will-clear-irans-mines-in-the-strait-of-hormuz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=48710","title":{"rendered":"How the US will clear Iran&#8217;s mines in the Strait of Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As peace talks between America and Iran fell apart over the weekend, President Trump has called for the US military <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/06\/us-news\/trump-admin-live-updates-april-6-7-8-9\/\">to take control of the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and clear the water of Tehran\u2019s mines. <\/p>\n<p>The strait, which oversees 20% of the world\u2019s oil transports, has remained closed since the war began on Feb. 28, with Iran filling the passage <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/24\/world-news\/iran-has-placed-deadly-sea-mines-in-strait-of-hormuz-report\/\">with deadly, underwater mines<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>To clear the waters, the US will tap its own navy and that of allied nations to deploy minesweepers and<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/11\/world-news\/iran-threatens-to-attack-any-us-navy-ships-that-enter-the-strait-of-hormuz\/\"> clear the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> to resume global trade, Trump said Sunday. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>President Trump said the US Navy will be reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has kept shut after the war began.  <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have minesweepers there now,\u201d Trump told Fox News\u2019 \u201cSunday Morning Futures.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have highly sophisticated underwater minesweepers, which are the latest and the greatest, but we\u2019re also bringing in more traditional minesweepers,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI understand the UK and a couple of other countries are sending minesweepers. A lot of countries don\u2019t have minesweepers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>US Central Command (CENTCOM) said operations to clear the Strait of Hormuz began on Saturday after two American destroyers <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/11\/world-news\/iran-threatens-to-attack-any-us-navy-ships-that-enter-the-strait-of-hormuz\/\">passed through the waters<\/a> for the first time since the war began. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow, but key waterway that oversees the transport of 20% of the world\u2019s oil supply.  <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The US Navy will be deploying \u201cunderwater drones\u201d to locate Iran\u2019s mines and take them out \u201cin the coming days,\u201d CENTCOM added. <\/p>\n<p>The US military has several underwater UAVs capable of traversing the strait, including the 1,7000 pound Knifefish drone, developed by General Dynamics. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Knifefish UUV provides the mine warfare commander with enhanced mine-hunting capability by detecting, classifying and identifying both buried mines and mines in high clutter environments,\u201d according to the company. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>More than 2,000 ships have been left to idle and wait by the waters around the Strait of Hormuz. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The navy is also equipped with the Mod 2 Kingfish, a missile-shaped drone outfitted with sonar that scans the ocean floor for potential mines.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the underwater drones, the navy also has the MH-60S helicopters, which are equipped with the\u00a0Airborne Laser Mine Detection System (ALMDS) and Airborne Mine Neutralization System (AMNS).<\/p>\n<p>The systems allow the choppers to quickly locate underwater mines in the area and send out small warheads to detonate the explosive, according to the Navy.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Only a handful of ships have crossed through the Strait of Hormuz every day during the war, the majority of which are linked to Iran and China.  <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cToday, we began the process of establishing a new passage and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce,\u201d CENTCOM commander Adm.
