{"id":48821,"date":"2026-04-12T19:12:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T19:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=48821"},"modified":"2026-04-12T19:12:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T19:12:16","slug":"nyt-journo-admits-he-was-torn-on-rooting-for-u-s-in-iran-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=48821","title":{"rendered":"NYT Journo Admits He Was \u2018Torn\u2019 On Rooting For U.S. In Iran War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-body-text\">\n<div class=\"eifyuf80 css-5a7pfj\" style=\"position:relative\" data-narration-container=\"true\">\n<p>President Donald Trump and a number in his administration have suggested that Democrats and media were actively rooting for the United States to lose the war with Iran \u2014 and one New York Times columnist gave a striking example of that during a Saturday interview on CNN.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign affairs columnist Thomas Friedman admitted that he felt torn over fully backing the United States in the ongoing Operation Epic Fury, saying that he wanted the Iranian regime to fall but that he wasn\u2019t sure it was worth the cost of elevating President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>Friedman told CNN host Micheal Smerconish that he was all for the end of the Iranian regime, but that it was the likelihood the credit \u2014 and with that credit, political capital \u2014 would go to Trump and Netanyahu that gave him pause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Don\u2019t want Iran to lose if it means Trump wins. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomfriedman?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@TomFriedman<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@NYTimes<\/a> really wants \u201cto see Iran defeated militarily because this regime is a terrible regime for its people and the region,\u201d but on CNN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/smerconish?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Smerconish<\/a> he fretted \u201cthe problem is I really don\u2019t want to see Bibi\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rgPngGXkGc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/rgPngGXkGc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brent Baker \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf2\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf1 (@BrentHBaker) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrentHBaker\/status\/2043048290523005341?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 11, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI find myself, Michael, in a situation where I really want to see Iran defeated militarily because this regime is a terrible regime for the people and the region,\u201d he explained, saying that the best thing for the Iranian people \u2014 and for the region across the board \u2014 would be a regime change that resulted in leadership that allowed the people to flourish and thrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m all for that. The problem is I really don\u2019t want to see Bibi Netanyahu or Donald Trump politically strengthened by this war because they are two awful human beings,\u201d Friedman continued. \u201cThey are both engaged in anti-democratic projects in their own countries. They\u2019re both alleged crooks.
