{"id":49564,"date":"2026-04-13T13:59:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T13:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=49564"},"modified":"2026-04-13T13:59:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T13:59:06","slug":"costco-workers-hate-the-new-8-second-self-checkouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=49564","title":{"rendered":"Costco workers hate the new 8-second self-checkouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Costco has started to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/04\/business\/costco-confirms-testing-of-scan-and-go-checkout-technology-to-speed-up-long-lines\/\">test a new checkout system<\/a> that supposedly takes just eight seconds \u2014 and workers appear to hate it.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Ron Vachris told investors that the company launched a system that has employees scanning items in customers\u2019 carts before they even get to the cash register. The new system is aimed at speeding up throughput and reducing errors.<\/p>\n<p>While standing in line for checkout, a Costco staff member will come to your cart and scan all of the items. Once you reach the register, you\u2019ll scan your membership card and all of the scanned items will load on the screen. All you have to do at that point is pay.<\/p>\n<p>The new technology allows for \u201can average transaction time of around eight seconds,\u201d Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said in the company\u2019s second-quarter earnings call, per the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>As it is, customers report that current wait times can exceed 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly results show this is improving the flow of traffic, and we have received great member feedback,\u201d Millerchip said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Some customers and Costco workers have shared on social media that the technology has already been brought into their local stores, and there seems to be a disparity between consumer and employee feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Most employees on social media expressed negative responses to the new system.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/CostcoEmployee\/comments\/1sfzruq\/prescanned_self_checkouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CostcoEmployee sub-Reddit<\/a>, a user shared that their store implemented the new system and \u201cit is horrible here,\u201d though they noted that \u201cit could work better but we just don\u2019t have the hang of it yet and nor do the members.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button button--modal-trigger\" aria-label=\"Open the image in a modal.\" data-modal-image=\"39070441\"><br \/>\n\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-plus\" fill=\"#fff\" viewbox=\"0 0 1033 1000\" width=\"1em\" height=\"1em\"><path d=\"M380 364V0h273v355h380v290H653v355H380V645H0V355h380v9z\"\/><\/svg><br \/>\n<\/button><br \/>\n<figcaption>While standing in line for checkout, a Costco staff member will come to your cart and scan all of the items before reaching the cashier. <span class=\"credit\">dennizn \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pain\u2026 It\u2019s slower now,\u201d one person said. \u201cYou have one cashier pre-scanning everything, holding up the line, and members trying to skip the line, which makes the people waiting even more frustrated because others aren\u2019t following the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been such a f\u2013king disaster,\u201d an employee shared. \u201cOur GM is now bragging about how much better our prescan numbers but now lines are even worse and both members and employees are pissed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another user noted that \u201cpre-scan for registers works nicely because no one is itching to cut in front of you while you scan. Pre-scan for self checkout is an absolute ticking time bomb before members argue about cutting while you scan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate it. It usually ends up taking longer than just taking the stuff out of the basket and ringing it up at the register. At the register, I\u2019ve had so many mistakes from the people prescanning. Missed items, double charges. Why does Costco hate technology that actually works?\u201d another person wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s literally one of the worst things Costco has ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mixed reviews<\/a> of the new system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have been doing this at my Costco for quite some time. Very convenient. Definitely speeds check out,\u201d one person wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had them pre-scan my cart in line, and it saved a couple minutes while helping the lines flow a little faster. It\u2019s not revolutionary, it\u2019s just helpful,\u201d a user added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo add a dissenting opinion, it has only ever added time for me as someone who only buys a handful of items per trip,\u201d another chimed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s dumb. It\u2019ll work if they let customers use the scan guns, but they just refuse. If you read this thread, you\u2019ll see people outlining all the ways it sucks,\u201d someone said.<\/p>\n<p>Some customers pointed out that the eight seconds is only the time it takes to pay and doesn\u2019t include the amount of time spent in the line or scanning the items.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight seconds is bs. That\u2019s the time to pay only. But to get there, you are still in a line. Still waiting for a scanner person to show up. Waiting for those ahead of you. Waiting in that awful line to check receipts,\u201d someone noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re adding pay stations that let you pay for your pre-scanned order in 8 seconds? So they\u2019re no longer counting the time it takes to scan things in their time it takes to check out?
