{"id":50168,"date":"2026-04-14T05:17:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T05:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=50168"},"modified":"2026-04-14T05:17:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T05:17:40","slug":"blame-buc-ees-7-eleven-to-close-645-stores-in-major-revamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=50168","title":{"rendered":"Blame Buc-ee&#8217;s? 7-Eleven to close 645 stores in major revamp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Call it a Slurpee shake-up.<\/p>\n<p>7-Eleven is slashing hundreds of stores \u2014 and supersizing what\u2019s left \u2014 as the convenience giant pivots from quick pit stops to full-on food destinations.<\/p>\n<p>Amid a national trend towards better eats and bigger stores from other, growing chains like <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/09\/lifestyle\/kwik-trip-revealed-as-americas-favorite-convenience-store-over-wawa-and-buc-ees-survey\/\">Wawa<\/a>, Sheetz and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/22\/business\/gas-station-chain-buc-ees-to-open-first-locations-in-new-states\/\">Bu-cee\u2019s<\/a>, the long-running brand confirmed it will shutter a whopping 645 locations during its 2026 fiscal year (March 1, 2026, through Feb. 28, 2027) \u2014\u00a0as part of a sweeping overhaul that swaps struggling storefronts for larger footprints <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/11\/lifestyle\/7-elevens-free-slurpee-day-is-back-heres-how-to-get-the-beloved-frozen-treat-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and a whole lot more grub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t pour one out just yet: the company is also in expansion mode, planning hundreds of new locations as it eyes a future that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/24\/business\/record-15k-us-stores-to-close-this-year-as-shein-temu-surge-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looks less like a corner store<\/a> and more like a fast-casual pit stop.<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the revamp is a new \u201cfood-forward\u201d store format \u2014 one that leans heavily into prepared meals, drinks and an upgraded in-store experience.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThese food-forward stores are resonating with our customers and driving [average sales per store day] about 18% higher than our system average,\u201d 7-Eleven President Stan Reynolds said <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4774991-seven-and-i-holdings-co-ltd-svndy-q4-2024-earnings-call-transcript\">in the company\u2019s fiscal Q4 earnings call<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll continue learning from these stores and refine our new store standard to meet the needs of consumers both now and in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Translation: less dusty shelves, more dinner staples.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>7-Eleven is axing 645 stores while beefing up the survivors, trading quick pit stops for food-packed, fast-casual-style hubs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The redesigned locations will feature expanded food and beverage options and a broader product assortment, with some stores even morphing into so-called \u201cwholesale fuel stores\u201d \u2014 a format that won\u2019t count toward the company\u2019s official store total.<\/p>\n<p>The closures are part of what the company calls \u201cportfolio optimization\u201d \u2014 corporate speak for cutting underperformers loose.<\/p>\n<p>And there have been plenty to cut.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/12\/business\/7-eleven-closing-nearly-450-underperforming-stores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously reported<\/a> by The Post, 7-Eleven has already closed more than 600 stores across 2024 and 2025 combined, including nearly 450 locations in North America alone. <\/p>\n<p>Weak cigarette sales \u2014 once the backbone of convenience store profits \u2014 have taken a major hit, plunging 26% since 2019, alongside decreased foot traffic and inflation pressures.<\/p>\n<p>While hundreds of locations are getting the axe, the company is still planting new flags. 7-Eleven isn\u2019t just trimming the fat \u2014 it\u2019s playing retail musical chairs. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The chain\u2019s still expanding, rolling out bigger locations that promise more meals, more drinks and way more than your average quick bite run. <span class=\"credit\">LightRocket via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The chain is expected to open 122 stores this year while shuttering 373, then ramp things up next year with 205 openings and a hefty 645 closures \u2014 all while plotting a 500-store expansion blitz between 2025 and 2027.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s less a retreat \u2014 and more a reshuffle. And industry analysts say the shift is bigger than it looks.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/content\/podcast-japan-s-konbini-culture-america-s-convenience-crisis-7-eleven-s-next-move-reimagining-retail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcast episode,<\/a> eMarketer senior retail analyst Blake Droesch described the shift as more of a \u201ctransformation\u201d than an expansion, noting that 7-Eleven has actually been closing more stores than it\u2019s opening \u2014 a trend he said is set to continue this year.<\/p>\n<p>He added that they are \u201ccompletely shifting their business model from just convenience store to convenience store, plus restaurant or food service outlet plus grocery.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The new-look stores will be bigger, bolder and packed with more food and drink \u2014 with some even flipping into \u201cwholesale fuel\u201d hubs that don\u2019t make the official count. <span class=\"credit\">Mdv Edwards \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Behind the scenes, there\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/19\/business\/7-eleven-target-of-31b-buyout-bid-from-circle-k-owner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bigger play brewing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Parent company Seven &amp; I Holdings is gearing up to take 7-Eleven public, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cstoredive.com\/news\/7-eleven-plans-to-close-645-c-stores-in-fiscal-2026\/817294\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Convenience Store Dive<\/a> \u2014 but not before giving it a glow-up. <\/p>\n<p>The IPO, originally slated for 2026, has been pushed to 2027 to give the chain time to tighten operations and boost performance.<\/p>\n<p>All those closures, openings and menu upgrades?
