Chinese scientists have made a disconcerting find regarding the mechanism behind the caldera\u2019s eruption, sparking concerns that it could belch lava sooner than we\u2019d hoped, per an explosive study in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.ady2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A study on the mechanism behind the Yellowstone supervolcano\u2019s magma flow has sparked concerns that an eruption could be on the horizon. <span class=\"credit\">Lane Erickson \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Contrary to prior scholarship, which suggested that the magma originates in large deep chambers, the new study suggests that it could be lurking just below Earth\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>The team, from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS), had set out to study the engine behind supervolcanoes \u2014 volcanic expulsions that eject over 230 cubic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1123580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">miles of magma, rock and ash.<\/a> <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Morning Glory Pool at Yellowstone National Park. <span class=\"credit\">Brad Pict \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Ranking among the most cataclysmic geological events on Earth, these eruptions can have devastating effects on both the environment and human civilization alike.<\/p>\n<p>The Yellowstone supervolcano Yellowstone supervolcano, which lies underneath a 30\u2013by\u201345\u2013mile crater Yellowstone Caldera, has produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/volcanoes\/yellowstone\/questions-about-yellowstone-volcanic-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three such supereruptions<\/a> in the the past 2.1 million years, per the US Geological Survey (USGS). <\/p>\n<p>If one were to occur today, it could create worldwide impacts, including massive pyroclastic flows, feet of toxic ash inundating the Midwest, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/faqs\/what-would-happen-if-a-supervolcano-eruption-occurred-again-yellowstone#:~:text=Natural%20Hazards-,What%20would%20happen%20if%20a%20%22supervolcano%22%20eruption%20occurred%20again%20at,next%20few%20thousands%20of%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agricultural ruin with a projected $3 trillion<\/a> in damages and millions of lives threatened.<\/p>\n<p>To shed light on the mechanism behind magma generation in supervolcanoes, the team had devised a comprehensive three-dimensional model of western North America. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A model detailing the surprisingly shallow source of supervolcano eruptions. <span class=\"credit\">Zebin Cao et al<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This facsimile simulated the present-day dynamics of both the lithosphere \u2014 the cold, outermost layer of the Earth \u2014 and asthenosphere, the hot and slow-flowing ductile mantle underneath that drives volcanic eruptions.<\/p>\n<p>Prior scholarship suggested that supervolcanoes harbored large magma changes that will amass molten rock until the pressure grew to powerful and prompt an eruption. However, these reservoirs were conspicuously absent from the large supervolcanoes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The models revealed that the Yellowstone volcano is replenished by tectonic activity near the surface rather than any deep magma reservoir. <span class=\"credit\">Zebin Cao et al<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, using this latest model, the team discovered that the eruption is generated via a much shallower source \u2014 large, sprawling zones of partially molten rock called \u201cmagma mush\u201d systems that permeate much of the Earth\u2019s lithosphere. <\/p>\n<p>Magma originates in the upper asthenosphere and ascends into the outer layer, where it it mixes with surrounding solid rocks to form a viscous magma mush. However, the mechanism behind how it melts in the first place remains unclear.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>All the while, a hot rock is steadily flowing eastward beneath the caldera, ripping apart the lithosphere\u2019s hard rock, and forging a channel through which the molten rock can rise and fill the volcano\u2019s mush reservoir with molten rock.<\/p>\n<p>This means that a supervolcano can replenish its magma supply via tectonic activity alone sans the need for some deep lava chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Yellowstone isn\u2019t slated to blow its top anytime soon. Based on the prior three eruptions, there has been an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/faqs\/yellowstone-overdue-eruption-when-will-yellowstone-erupt?qt-news_science_products=0&amp;items_per_page=6&amp;page=1#:~:text=This%20comes%20out%20to%20an,the%20eruptions%2C%20which%20is%20meaningless.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around 725,000 between events,<\/a> meaning we technically have 100,000 years to go before the next one.<\/p>\n<p>And, as the USGS experts pointed out, \u201cthis is based on the average of just two time intervals between the eruptions, which is meaningless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plus, even if the caldera does go off again, it might not even be large as the most \u201cthe most recent volcanic eruption at Yellowstone was a lava flow that occurred 70,000 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYellowstone is not overdue for an eruption,\u201d they declared. \u201cVolcanoes do not work in predictable ways and their eruptions do not follow predictable schedules.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/14\/science\/frightening-new-yellowstone-study-sparks-eruption-fears\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Will Yellowstone erupt or are we blowing things out of proportion?
