Lena Dunham<\/strong><\/a> and Adam Driver<\/strong><\/a> \u201cfelt like partners\u201d while filming the first season of Girls<\/em><\/a> \u2014 and she claimed it nearly led to something deeper.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne Saturday afternoon, as I reached for a glass of water in his galley kitchen and chatted offhandedly about something meaningless, I looked up to see him smiling at me with something so tender, it felt like it could only have been love,\u201d Dunham, 39, wrote in her new memoir, Famesick<\/em><\/a>, explaining that she and Driver, 42, would rehearse on the weekends at his apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt disarmed me so totally that I dropped my glass,\u201d she wrote in the book, which was released on Tuesday, April 14. Dunham claimed that Driver asked: \u201cYou really don\u2019t know how beautiful you are, do you?\u201d<\/p>\n

While they \u201cfought often,\u201d there was an \u201cintensity\u201d to their connection, which was displayed onscreen. (Dunham played Hannah and Driver played Adam on Girls<\/em>, which ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017.)<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I\u2019d tell him he made me feel safe,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI didn\u2019t yet understand that sometimes you say what you wish were true, instead of just saying what is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunham recalled meeting up with Driver after watching him in a play. He allegedly drove Dunham home because her parents were out of town. (Dunham has lived with her parents on and off throughout her career.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t remember most of what we talked about \u2014 I think he complained about monogamy and feeling misunderstood \u2014 only that he listened with surprising concern as I described what had happened and stayed until my eyes started to close, then gently tiptoed out,\u201d Dunham wrote. \u201cI spent an inordinate amount of time wondering if Adam liked me. He could be short-tempered and verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his alleged temper, Driver was also \u201cprotective\u201d and \u201cloving\u201d toward Dunham\u2014 especially when she discussed \u201cmistreatment by one of the random guys\u201d she dated.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring this week \u2014 the week my parents were out of town, when his girlfriend was doing a play in Cincinnati \u2014 he was pure concern, pure laughter, pure gold,\u201d Dunham recalled. \u201cBut that week, the week of my empty apartment, he came over almost every night.\u201d<\/p>\n

She claimed, \u201cOn Friday, he called me as he was leaving the theater. \u2018You still home alone, Dunham?\u2019 I was. \u2018OK. I\u2019m riding down to you. But I\u2019m warning you, if I come up, I\u2019m not leaving this time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

After 10 minutes, Driver allegedly called Dunham when he was outside. She \u201cdidn\u2019t answer\u201d the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome part of me knew \u2014 some wise part of me, some bold part of me \u2014 that if we crossed whatever boundary we were threatening to cross, the return to work would be tinged with humiliation,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThat I\u2019d be minimizing any authority I still had, and that, however it went, my heart-bruised but improbably not yet broken-would crack.\u201d<\/p>\n
