Perhaps one of the best juice cleanses is right for you.<\/p>\n<p>With Spring in full bloom, many are seeking to revamp their wellness routines, including incorporating healthier foods and dietary practices into the mix.<\/p>\n<p>While cleanses involving \u201cdetox\u201d teas and sketchy-sounding herbs are generally downvoted by wellness experts, there are some scientifically backed benefits to juicing, when done correctly.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Juice Cleanse Benefits<\/h2>\n<p>To get to the bottom of juice cleanses, the Post spoke with a number of health and wellness experts, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amystephensnutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amy Stephens<\/a>, a board-certified dietitian who specializes in performance nutrition and eating disorders. She currently serves as a sports dietitian for NYU Athletics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA\u00a0juice cleanse\u00a0is a short-term eating plan that replaces food with\u00a0juices. Most plans recommend using fresh-pressed\u00a0juices\u00a0made from fresh fruits, vegetables, and added flavorings such as lemon, cayenne pepper, turmeric, or ginger,\u201d Stephens explained. \u201cThe goal of a\u00a0cleanse\u00a0is to detoxify the body and mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/expert-answers\/juicing\/faq-20058020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayo Clinic<\/a> does suggest that juicing can help reset the digestive system, while still providing essential vitamins and minerals. However, many experts, including Stephens, caution against juice cleanses that are geared towards rapid weight loss or to reset eating habits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe risks of low blood sugar and triggering disordered eating thoughts are a major concern,\u201d she shared. \u201cThese plans promote the sense that they can fix eating habits, but have the potential to cause more harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephens added that juice cleanses can cause a range of side effects \u2014 some immediate and physical, others more long-term and related to mood and mental health.\u00a0She highlighted that fatigue, brain fog, dizziness, and low energy often accompany longer cleanses. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/iStock-1331592415.jpg\"><button class=\"button button--modal-trigger\" aria-label=\"Open the image in a modal.\" data-modal-image=\"22214261\"><br \/>\n\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-plus\" fill=\"#fff\" viewbox=\"0 0 1033 1000\" width=\"1em\" height=\"1em\"><path d=\"M380 364V0h273v355h380v290H653v355H380V645H0V355h380v9z\"\/><\/svg><br \/>\n<\/button><br \/>\n<\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images\/iStockphoto<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In order to avoid or minimize these side effects, Stephens has recommended meeting a\u00a0minimum intake of 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day, even on a\u00a0cleanse. She also suggested skipping workouts and adding protein or healthy fats to a smoothie to improve energy. <\/p>\n<p>While Stephens emphasizes that long-term cleanses can be risky, she does acknowledge that juice\u00a0cleanses can provide a concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>Although creating your own blend is ideal (several folks on our team recommend using a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/shopping\/we-tested-the-best-vitamix-blenders-of-2024-our-full-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vitamix<\/a> for this), not everyone cleanse?<\/h3>\n<p>A juice cleanse can be all-in or gradual, with juices being consumed between small meals throughout the day. The base is typically fruit and vegetable juice blends, packed with leafy greens like kale and spinach, and other nutrient-dense foods like carrots, beets, green apples, lemons, and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>RELATED:<\/em><\/strong> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/article\/best-greens-powders-review\/\">Best green powders, per our review<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The purpose for many is to \u201cdetox\u201d the body by flushing out any processed foods, only introducing raw and organic fruits and veggies for the duration of the cleanse. In many cases, that is why you are permitted to snack on specific foods in non-juice form if you get hungry, which also helps if you have a need to chew. <\/p>\n<p>The purpose of a cleanse should<strong> not<\/strong> be to lose weight, as this type of calorie deficit is not sustainable and can lead to poor nutrition and eating habits. That is also why it is only recommended to do a cleanse for a few days at most, following the proper before- and after-care listed below.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How should I prepare my body before a cleanse?<\/h3>\n<p>Even though you may miss your cheeseburgers for a bit, eating a huge meal before starting a cleanse isn\u2019t a great idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make a cleanse less of a shock to the body, you can start easing in by adjusting<br \/>your diet accordingly. Eliminate or reduce stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol, foods high in sugar and fat, as well as refined carbohydrates,\u201d said Syn.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should I do after the cleanse is over?<\/h3>\n<p>Similarly, ending a cleanse isn\u2019t the end of your health journey either, should you want the feel-good effects to actually last. While continuing to avoid alcohol and caffeine, Syn listed some additional tips for coming out of the cleanse, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a cleanse, focus on nutritious whole foods such as the same fruits and vegetables<br \/>in their whole form, whole grains, and lean proteins,\u201d said Syn. \u201cAvoid foods that are high in fat or added sugar. As you reintroduce foods, continue to stay hydrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are juice cleanses actually good for you?<\/h3>\n<p>Juicing can have health benefits, as well as health risks. For those who are trying to eat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/expert-answers\/juicing\/faq-20058020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthy or boost nutrition<\/a>, a short juice cleanse may give the digestive system a much-needed break. However, some can be high in sugar and lacking in key nutrients, so it\u2019s important to read the nutritional label when selecting one.<\/p>\n<p>A person also runs the risk of not getting an appropriate amount of calories when juice cleansing. Making plans to eat small meals with healthy fats, carbs, and proteins, as Syn advises, along with juicing, is likely to be better for your overall health.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in losing weight or are seeking to address serious health concerns with a juice cleanse, speak to your medical physician first. They will be able to tailor a program specific to your needs and offer the proper recommendations and resources.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are there any safety concerns in doing a juice cleanse?<\/h3>\n<p>As with any change to your diet or restrictive eating, the first thing to note is whether you are physically and mentally healthy enough to participate. Those who aim to lose weight quickly or replace food entirely should not try a juice cleanse, as it can be a slippery slope to disordered eating. Also, for those who are pregnant, nursing, underweight, or those with any health conditions, a trip to the doctor or nutritionist is advised before altering your diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe low calorie and low protein content of juice can also cause low blood sugar, leading to headaches and dizziness,\u201d warned Syn. \u201cAlso, important to note \u2014 typically when the body is restricted of calories, they are regained, so a juice cleanse is not a sustainable eating pattern for someone seeking weight loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another concern is duration. Those who are looking to lose weight or make significant changes to their diet or lifestyle should seek the advice of a physician.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can diabetics do a juice cleanse?<\/h3>\n<p>Diabetics are typically not recommended to do juice cleanses. These types of cleanses lack the protein, fiber and other nutrients that help stabilize blood sugar. There is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/17\/3\/458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some research<\/a> suggesting that short-term juicing can negatively impact the gut biome.
