Tens of thousands of people are missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ahead of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2026\/04\/14\/sudan-world-leaders-need-to-act-on-ongoing-atrocities\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">conference<\/a> in Berlin on Wednesday that many hope can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2026\/apr\/14\/sudan-ceasefires-plan-for-peace\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">push Sudan closer to the summit of the diplomatic agenda<\/a>, Brown said: \u201cIt seems to me, every single conversation on Sudan is about the humanitarian crisis. Unacceptable that the world focuses on other crises and leans into it entirely to find solutions: why not here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The scale of Sudan\u2019s deepening suffering is underlined by a wealth of new reports released ahead of 15 April, the third anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2024\/mar\/22\/what-caused-the-civil-war-in-sudan-and-how-has-it-become-one-of-the-worlds-worst-humanitarian-crises\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">ruinous war<\/a> between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese army.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">New Islamic Relief <a href=\"https:\/\/islamic-relief.org\/news\/hundreds-of-sudans-community-kitchens-forced-to-shut-in-last-six-months-new-islamic-relief-research-finds\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">research<\/a> reveals that almost half of Sudan\u2019s vital community kitchens \u2013 a lifeline for millions \u2013 have closed in the past six months, exacerbating hunger and the threat of famine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Two other studies corroborate the food crisis. One, by a coalition of aid agencies including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionagainsthunger.org\/publications\/what-it-takes-to-eat-conflict-and-fragile-food-systems-in-sudan\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Action Against Hunger<\/a>, found millions of Sudanese were surviving on a single meal a day, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercycorps.org\/research-resources\/rebuilding-sudans-breadbasket\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">analysis by Mercy Corps<\/a> highlighted alarming disruption to one of the country\u2019s most crucial food-producing regions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"ce61d2d1-eb82-47fb-ba4e-2ca8265f133b\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">A community kitchen in Sururab. We do not know whether he is alive or dead,\u201d said Fatima.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Her comments came as the German government prepared to host <a href=\"https:\/\/unric.org\/en\/sudan-berlin-conference-seeks-aid-access-and-civilian-path-forward\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the latest conference<\/a> on Sudan, an event aid agencies hope will secure increased funding and pressure warring parties to allow humanitarian access throughout the vast country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Various \u201cpeace talk\u201d initiatives have failed to stem the violence \u2013 characterised by repeated atrocities and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2026\/02\/1166960\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">war crimes<\/a> \u2013 with both sides apparently believing they can still win outright.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"a94e475a-ee93-4b8a-be90-f1ce8624bc13\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">The ICRC helps trace missing persons; last year they assisted 62,000 families looking for relatives.<\/span> Photograph: Hassan Kamil\/British Red Cross<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The issue of money has become increasingly critical with overall funding for Sudan\u2019s humanitarian plans now only 16% met this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sheldon Yett of the UN agency for children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/sudan\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Unicef,<\/a> said even the modest amounts forthcoming are becoming less impactful with transport costs increasing 30% due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/live\/2026\/apr\/14\/iran-war-hurting-global-economic-growth-imf-meeting-rachel-reeves-oil-price-stock-markets-latest-updates\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Iran war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn some cases, the cost of delivery is now greater than the cost of the supplies themselves.
