{"id":51459,"date":"2026-04-15T13:39:28","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T13:39:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=51459"},"modified":"2026-04-15T13:39:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T13:39:28","slug":"400-lawyers-call-for-urgent-hearing-of-imaan-and-hadis-pleas-for-sentence-suspension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=51459","title":{"rendered":"400 lawyers call for urgent hearing of Imaan and Hadi\u2019s pleas for sentence suspension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/large\/2026\/04\/151523494c5c31e.webp\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ISLAMABAD: Around 400 lawyers on Wednesday signed a resolution calling for an urgent hearing of sentence suspension pleas filed by human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, over their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1968788\"><u>conviction<\/u><\/a><u> <\/u>in the controversial tweets case.<\/p>\n<p>On January 24, Imaan and Hadi were handed a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1968788\"><u>17 years<\/u><\/a> in jail on multiple charges under the Prevention of Electr\u00adonic Crimes Act (Peca) by a sessions court in Islamabad, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1968798\"><u>sparking outrage<\/u><\/a> among rights groups, opposition parties, and other segments of society.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer duo was sentenced to 10 years\u2019 imprisonment under Peca\u2019s Section 10 (cyberterrorism), five years\u2019 jail under Section 9 (glorification of an offence) and two years in prison under Section 26-A (false and fake information).<\/p>\n<p>In the resolution, also shared by Imaan\u2019s mother and former human rights minister Shireen Mazari on X, the lawyers expressed solidarity with Imaan and Hadi.<\/p>\n<p>They stated that the couple had been the \u201cvoice of the marginalised sections of the society, and had always attempted to restore the public\u2019s faith in the justice system\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShireenMazari1\/status\/2044330740524167561\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--twitter  \"><span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShireenMazari1\/status\/2044330740524167561\"><\/a>\n    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The joint statement said that their actions had always been within the ambit of the Constitution and the law, reiterating that \u201cit is illegal to interpret a lawyer\u2019s public statements or social media posts \u2014 which have always been for the purpose of advocating for human rights \u2014 as having criminal intent (<em>Mens Rea<\/em>)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution maintained that the filing of such cases against them was \u201cnot only malicious in intent but also amounted to harassment of the legal fraternity and obstruction of their duties\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers, in the resolution, laid out four demands to the Islamabad Bar Association, the Islamabad High Court Bar Association and the Islamabad Bar Council, stating that the case against Imaan and Hadi was in \u201cviolation of Article 10A (right to fair trial) of the Constitution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The joint statement also sought the urgent fixing of the pleas seeking suspension of the couple\u2019s sentences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pleas should be heard on a priority basis,\u201d the resolution read. It further demanded that a representative from the Islamabad Bar \u201cshould visit the jail to review the facilities provided to the couple and examine their health and submit a report to the general body\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full sm:w-1\/2  media--right    media--uneven  media--stretch\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1968787\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--newskitlink  \">    <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Thirdly, the resolution sought the provision of \u201cB-class facilities\u201d to Mazari and Chattha, \u201cas stipulated by the jail manual in accordance with their education, professional and social status\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The joint statement demanded that Imaan and Hadi should be given a fair trial and that not presenting them in court due to \u201csecurity considerations\u201d was an obstruction of justice, the resolution read.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the resolution sought an end to cases registered against lawyers \u201cbased on social media posts or legal opinion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On February 7, the couple had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1971698\"><u>challenged<\/u><\/a> the trial court\u2019s order.
