More than \u00a31bn has been pledged for war-ravaged Sudan<\/a> at a conference in Berlin, eclipsing the funding target organisers had set to help mitigate the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n

The financial commitments made on Wednesday will also help offset a chronic humanitarian funding shortfall in a country devastated<\/a> by three years of conflict, where two-thirds of its population \u2013 34m people \u2013 require assistance.<\/p>\n

German ministers had set a notional target of $1bn (\u00a3740m) in funding commitments from international donors.<\/p>\n

Hours after hearing the UN chief, Antonio Guterres, call for an end to the \u201cnightmare\u201d, delegates had pledged a total of \u00a31.13bn.<\/p>\n

However, the prospect of peace remains as distant as ever<\/a>, with scant progress reported on ceasefire talks. Neither of Sudan\u2019s warring parties \u2013 the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the army \u2013 travelled to Berlin.<\/p>\n

As the conference<\/a> got under way, Sudan\u2019s army-aligned foreign ministry denounced delegates for not consulting it, accusing western countries of a \u201ccolonial tutelage approach\u201d.<\/p>\n

Outside Germany\u2019s foreign ministry, hundreds of protesters assembled, many chanting against the United Arab Emirates and its alleged support for the RSF.<\/p>\n

Inside, speaking on the event\u2019s sidelines, Donald Trump\u2019s senior adviser for African affairs, Massad Boulos, said the US was not taking sides in the war and that \u201cour only concern is humanitarian\u201d.<\/p>\n

Boulos said the US was seeking a humanitarian truce that would allow aid to reach those in need, adding that any truce should lead to a permanent ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic efforts led by the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE \u2013 known as the Quad \u2013 have so far failed to achieve meaningful progress.<\/p>\n

Announcing the funding pledges, Germany\u2019s foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, said the commitments provided a rare positive development in the context of shrinking<\/a> aid budgets.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThe fact that, in a world of dwindling humanitarian resources, participants have already pledged more than \u20ac1.3bn in support is a good sign. For this, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all donors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pledges come as Sudan grapples with an alarming funding shortfall to cope with its vast humanitarian challenges.<\/p>\n

So far, just 16% of the overall \u00a32.1bn humanitarian needs assessment<\/a> for Sudan this year has been funded.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Guterres had told international delegates that \u201ccredible allegations of the gravest international crimes\u201d were continually emerging from the conflict.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWomen and girls have been terrorised and systematic sexual violence has prevailed. Families and communities have been devastated.<\/p>\n

\u201cPartners must step up. But let\u2019s be clear: funding alone cannot substitute for peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, adding: \u201cExternal interference and the flow of arms that fuel this war must finally end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Egypt is among a number of states supporting Sudan\u2019s military, while evidence suggests the UAE is backing the RSF \u2013 which it denies.<\/p>\n

Without naming any countries, the UK foreign secretary, Yvette Cooper, called for a concerted international effort to stop the flow of arms into Sudan.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cCountries from across the world are coming together here in Berlin to discuss the way, frankly, the international community has failed the people of Sudan.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
