In contrast, BRP appears to act specifically in the hypothalamus, which controls appetite and metabolism.’

Experts estimate only one in four patients on GLP-1s keep using the medications after a year due to side effects, and those who stop typically gain back about 60 percent of the weight lost within a year.

The findings come as a recent CDC report found that obesity is still on the rise in the US despite the GLP-1 boom.

The report showed that between August 2021 and August 2023, 31.7 percent of adults over the age of 20 were considered overweight – an increase from 30.7 percent in the 2017 to 2018 report.

The share of adults classified as severely obese also rose from 9.2 percent to 9.7 percent.

In the new study, published in the journal Nature, researchers used an artificial intelligence algorithm to scan 20,000 human protein-coding genes to find an effective peptide.

The program came up with 2,683 possible peptides, and the researchers selected 100 that are found in metabolic tissues in areas like the liver, heart and brain.

About one in eight American adults have tried a GLP-1 medication, though the drugs have been associated with harsh side effects (stock image)

Based on testing in brain and pancreatic cells, they found BRP was the most effective in activating the FOS gene, which is responsible for cell proliferation.

They then injected BRP into mice and minipigs once per day for two weeks and found that just one injection reduced food intake by up to 50 percent within an hour.

There were also improvements in glucose and insulin tolerance, meaning the animals’ bodies had become more efficient in managing blood sugar, reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The animals also showed no changes in movement, water intake, mood or digestion and did not have side effects.

Researchers behind the study have said they are now working to identify the specific receptors that interact with BRP and how the findings may translate to human experiments, which could take several years.

‘The lack of effective drugs to treat obesity in humans has been a problem for decades,’ Svensson said.

‘Nothing we’ve tested before has compared to semaglutide’s ability to decrease appetite and body weight.
