US battery company Lyten has finalised the purchase of Northvolt\u2019s battery manufacturing and research assets in Sweden and established an industrial hub at the Skellefte\u00e5 site.<\/p>\n
The transaction includes Northvolt Ett and Ett Expansion in Skellefte\u00e5, along with Northvolt Labs in V\u00e4ster\u00e5s, carrying a combined book value of about $5bn.<\/p>\n
Together, the facilities comprise 16GWh of existing cell production capacity, more than 160 hectares of land and Europe\u2019s \u201clargest\u201d battery R&D centre.<\/p>\n
In March, Northvolt filed for bankruptcy<\/a> in Sweden due to financial and operational challenges.<\/p>\n Lyten said production at the Skellefte\u00e5 plant will restart, with commercial battery cell shipments expected in the second half of 2026.<\/p>\n Northvolt Ett will manufacture lithium-ion nickel, manganese and cobalt (NMC) cells for battery energy storage systems (BESS), automotive and mobility applications, supplying Lyten\u2019s BESS assembly facility in Gdansk, Poland.<\/p>\n At Northvolt Labs, work will continue on long-life lithium-ion NMC cell development.<\/p>\n The site will also collaborate with Lyten\u2019s Silicon Valley operations to industrialise lithium-sulphur battery technology for large-scale output.<\/p>\n Lyten CEO and co-founder Dan Cook said: \u201cWith this acquisition, Lyten now operates one of the largest battery manufacturing campuses in Europe and the largest battery R&D centre in Europe.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have the infrastructure, talent, and technology to build a thriving battery ecosystem across North America and Europe, supported by local supply chains and local talent, to deliver on the rapidly growing global need for distributed electricity infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n Lyten said it has begun the process of restarting Northvolt Ett and Northvolt Labs and will launch a rehiring programme in Skellefte\u00e5 and V\u00e4ster\u00e5s.<\/p>\n The company previously completed the acquisition of Northvolt\u2019s BESS production site in Gdansk, Poland, and is advancing the purchase of Northvolt assets in Heide, Germany.<\/p>\n In April, Scania, the truck manufacturing subsidiary of Volkswagen, agreed to acquire<\/a> the Industrial Division of Northvolt Systems.<\/p>\n Northvolt Systems Industrial Division\u2019s operations are split between two sites including a leased production site in Gda\u0144sk, Poland, and an R&D centre located in Tomteboda, Stockholm, Sweden.<\/p>\n The unit is engaged in development and manufacturing of battery systems tailored for heavy industry applications, including material handling, construction equipment, and mining.<\/p>\n “Lyten acquires Northvolt\u2019s Swedish battery assets” was originally created and published by Just Auto<\/a>, a GlobalData owned brand.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
