{"id":6814,"date":"2026-02-27T21:03:29","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T21:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=6814"},"modified":"2026-02-27T21:03:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T21:03:29","slug":"ny-reps-silent-on-accepting-pay-while-120000-dhs-workers-go-unpaid-during-shutdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=6814","title":{"rendered":"NY reps silent on accepting pay while 120,000 DHS workers go unpaid during shutdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F02%2F122365804.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Most of New York\u2019s congressional delegation is declining to say whether they\u2019re still cashing paychecks as more than 100,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/24\/us-news\/dhs-shutdown-squeezes-secret-service-tsa-and-fema-bad-policy-amp-bad-politics\/\">Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees<\/a> have gone unpaid for a second week amid the partial government shutdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only two <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/26\/us-news\/nyers-want-retro-mementos-in-capsule-that-honors-americas-250th-birthday\/\">Empire State<\/a> congressional offices responded to The Post\u2019s inquiries about whether their bosses are continuing to accept their six-figure salaries while <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/20\/us-news\/rep-nicole-malliotakis-urges-trump-to-intervene-as-coast-guard-members-are-set-to-miss-paychecks\/\">Coast Guard members<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/14\/us-news\/tsa-agents-working-without-pay-as-funding-for-dhs-stalls\/\">Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) screeners<\/a> and others employees within the DHS umbrella brace for missed paychecks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Department of Homeland Security is currently shut down because Congress can\u2019t agree on a funding bill. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rep. Pat Ryan\u2019s (D-NY) office was the only one that signaled their member wouldn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/10\/us-news\/gop-senators-fume-that-lawmakers-got-paid-during-shutdown\/\">accept pay<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPat\u2019s policy is to not take paychecks during shutdowns,\u201d a spokesman for the Hudson Valley congressman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY) responded but declined to say if she would be accepting her $174,000 salary.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe White House and Congress must continue to negotiate in good faith to pass meaningful bipartisan reforms of ICE and end the DHS shutdown,\u201d New York\u2019s 4th District rep said in a statement. \u201cUntil then, I\u2019m fighting to relieve the shutdown\u2019s impacts on our frontline federal workers, including TSA agents and FEMA staff, and pass the Pay Our Troops Act to ensure members of the Coast Guard don\u2019t miss a paycheck.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The 26 other members of New York\u2019s delegation, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and all seven Republican House members, did not respond to The Post\u2019s requests for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Chuck Schumer and Democrats who continuously shut down government think their own paychecks are more important than the members of the Coast Guard and TSA agents who keep families safe every single day?\u201d Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other Democrats want reforms to ICE before funding DHS. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scott, who has donated his salary his entire time in the Senate, has pushed legislation that would prevent members of Congress from being paid until both chambers approve a budget resolution and pass all regular appropriations bills for the fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy No Budget, No Pay Act says that when Congress fails to do the most basic part of its job \u2013 by funding the government \u2013 and force a shutdown, members should feel the same consequences they\u2019re inflicting on others,\u201d the senator said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the same vein, Sen. Bernie Moreno\u2019s (R-Ohio) SHUTDOWN Act would penalize members of Congress by imposing a daily tax during a government shutdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats like Hakeem Jeffries want to get paid for shutting the government down,\u201d Moreno said in a statement.. \u201cThat\u2019s ridiculous. If Congress can\u2019t do the bare minimum, we don\u2019t deserve a paycheck.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). <\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Sen.
