anti-fraud action looks like"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Another day, another report of massive fraud against taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>Team Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/06\/us-news\/small-business-admin-uncovers-8-6-billion-in-fraud-in-ca\/\">revealed on Friday<\/a> that it\u2019s found $8.6 billion in shady COVID-era loans in the Golden State \u2014 and is acting to blunt the damage.<\/p>\n<p>This, just two days after White House announced that JD Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/05\/opinion\/jd-vance-hunting-vice-in-california\/\">will chair a task force<\/a> to clean up fraud-riddled California.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to the White House for pushing hard to reveal, stop and punish fraud in a state with few controls on public spending.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button perpetrators accountable; taxpayers deserve no less.<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s announcement included news that the Small Business Administration has suspended more than 111,000 borrowers alleged to have defrauded taxpayers during the COVID pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The accused swindlers improperly borrowed money under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program, SBA administrator Kelly Loeffler said.<\/p>\n<p>Loeffler added that in San Diego alone, she found one address tied to 14 different \u201csmall businesses\u201d created during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This entrepreneurial cluster collected more than $2 million in COVID loans that remain at least partially unrepaid, she said.<\/p>\n<p>These findings are but a sliver of the fraud that has spread through the state, causing what Loeffler dubbed \u201ca culture of fraud and abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The brazen scammers faced little \u2014 if any \u2014 accountability under the Biden administration in Washington or the Newsom administration in Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Newsom ally, scoffed this week at the anti-fraud work of the Trump team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump claims, wrongly, California is perpetuating fraud when we are the victim,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/05\/us-news\/california-ag-rob-bonta-pushes-back-on-fraud-claims-as-trump-admin-hones-in-on-golden-state\/\">Bonta huffed on Thursday.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He also called the anti-fraud push \u201cpartisan political theater,\u201d and an effort to \u201csow distrust\u201d in California government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But state government has done the latter all on its own.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the state has shoveled out tax dollars \u2014 often for feel-good, do-little pet causes or favored special interests \u2014 with few controls and little oversight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Officials such as Bonta and Gov. Gavin Newsom have focused on fighting President Trump and, especially in Newsom\u2019s case, prepping bids for higher office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a litany of state crises \u2014 from homelessness to water and energy shortages to yes, fraud \u2014 have festered and grown worse.<\/p>\n<p>Bonta\u2019s claim that California and\/or its elected officials are victims is laughable.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s obvious, but here we go: The victims of fraud are the taxpayers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump and his team understand that . . . which highlights a distinction between an administration that acts to protect taxpayers and another that never has.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/06\/opinion\/what-anti-fraud-action-looks-like\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another day, another report of massive fraud against taxpayers.
