Gavin Newsom has unveiled what he\u2019s calling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2026\/02\/25\/governor-newsom-launches-most-ambitious-water-plan-in-california-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cmost ambitious\u201d water plan in California history <\/a>by setting a massive supply target \u2014 enough water to power 18 million homes by 2040, which he says will help mitigate \u201cclimate-driven extremes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan hinges on Senate Bill 72, which sets a target of 9 million acre-feet of water by 2040 and requires better data collection and planning surrounding the state\u2019s water supply. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia\u2019s water system is under real strain from longer droughts, stronger storms, and growing demand across our communities and agricultural regions,\u201d state Sen. Anna Caballero, who wrote the bill, said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>The 9 million target \u2014 equivalent to two Shasta Reservoirs, which stores up to 4.55 million acre-feet of water for urban and agricultural use \u2014 is the amount of water California could lose \u201cas climate change reduces snowpack and intensifies drought,\u201d according to a news release from Newsom\u2019s office. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button button--modal-trigger\" aria-label=\"Open the image in a modal.\" data-modal-image=\"38628915\"><br \/>\n\t<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-plus\" fill=\"#fff\" viewbox=\"0 0 1033 1000\" width=\"1em\" height=\"1em\"><path d=\"M380 364V0h273v355h380v290H653v355H380V645H0V355h380v9z\"\/><\/svg><br \/>\n<\/button><br \/>\n<figcaption>The Shasta Resevoir, which stores up to 4.55 million acre-feet of water for municipal and agricultural use.  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The plan focuses on modernizing the state\u2019s sprawling water system and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/16\/opinion\/state-should-store-water-not-panic-over-climate\/\">protecting against droughts and storms<\/a> through conservation programs, stormwater capture, water recycling and other strategies.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The Department of Water Resources is assembling an advisory group to gather input about the plan from different regions in the state. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia\u2019s hydrology is changing. We\u2019re living that now,\u201d said Department of Water Resources Director Karla Nemeth. \u201cExtreme wet swings to intensely dry within the same season.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The committee will hold its first meeting in April and have representation from \u201curban and agricultural water suppliers, tribal, labor, environmental justice and environmental interests, local government, business and other interested parties,\u201d according to Newsom\u2019s office. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/27\/us-news\/gavin-newsom-touts-most-ambitious-water-plan-in-california\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
