Gone from the government. Benny Gantz is back where he was at the start of the war Hamas launched on October 7: an ex-defense minister, ex-chief of staff, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s chief political rival.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f66bdfb8c43716f33a065eb7841b44a4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You can\u2019t say he didn\u2019t warn us. On May 18, he announced that if Netanyahu didn\u2019t come up with a coherent plan to bring the hostages home and for the governance of post-war Gaza (among other things), then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/19\/middleeast\/netanyahu-israel-political-tensions-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">he\u2019d leave the war cabinet by June 8<\/a>. In light of Saturday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/09\/middleeast\/israel-hostage-rescue-gaza-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">rescue of four Israeli hostages<\/a>, he delayed making good on his threat \u2014 by a day.\u00a0\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-d295afc1b10ce26c4aafb20012f14e5b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLeaving the government is a complex and painful decision,\u201d Gantz said in a news conference on Sunday evening in Israel. But, \u201cNetanyahu prevents us from moving forward to a real victory (in Gaza).\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-b00f338538f84a7c51c7154f51ab6730@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So what now? The three most pressing areas of interest where Gantz\u2019s resignation may be felt \u2014 at least for Israelis, the Palestinians in Gaza, and the outside world \u2014 are the Israeli government, the running of the war with Hamas, and Gantz\u2019s own political prospects.\u00a0\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-1d9154a68d04ffbe4fd364012b98f124@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps the most important impact of Gantz\u2019s departure is the one it won\u2019t have: it\u00a0<em>won\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0cause the government to collapse.\n    <\/p>\n<aside data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/pull-quote\/instances\/pull-quote-eb0598c5617d4d10d4c6705c9fb534ac@published\" data-component-name=\"pull-quote\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"pull-quote_block-quote vossi-pull-quote_block-quote inline-placeholder\">\n            <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-sig-quote-default\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M9.277 6l.536.937c-1.224 1.12-1.584 2.961-1.6 4.236v.016h3.569v7.781H4v-6.103l.006-.02C4.037 10.014 6.287 6.874 9.276 6zm9.079 0l.536.937c-1.224 1.12-1.584 2.961-1.6 4.236v.016h3.569v7.78h-7.782v-6.102l.006-.02c.031-2.833 2.281-5.973 5.27-6.847z\"\/><\/svg><\/p>\n<div class=\" pull-quote_block-quote__section vossi-pull-quote_block-quote__section\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"pull-quote_block-quote__text  vossi-pull-quote_block-quote__text inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\">\n                    \u201cBenny Gantz is in a fix,\u201d former Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller told CNN on Sunday before Gantz\u2019s resignation. \u201cHe would like to remain in the government, he brings a sort of moderating hand, but he does not have the potential right now to down the government.\u201d\u00a0\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-80254fc97acdf0bdd9a621b12e54ce00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s because Netanyahu and his coalition partners still have 64 of the Knesset\u2019s 120 seats. So unless President Biden\u2019s \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/01\/europe\/netenyahu-ceasefire-hamas-contradiction-biden-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">sorry, Israel\u2019s<\/a> \u2014 hostage deal gets done, and Netanyahu\u2019s far-right ministers make good on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/02\/middleeast\/israeli-ministers-biden-ceasefire-plan-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>their<\/em>\u00a0threats to leave the government<\/a>, Netanyahu could safely stay in office until elections are due in October 2026 (opinion polls suggest that if they were held now, Gantz would win).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-38469480a860bcd3a379f540b8b9cdf0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It remains to be seen what a Gantz-free government means for the Palestinians in Gaza. Gantz is no dove, and his \u201cmoderating\u201d hand was unlikely to have resulted in Israel going any \u201ceasier\u201d on Hamas, or causing fewer civilian casualties.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-72d610627e492392016d4de7b8f44902@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But both Gantz and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have no qualms about disagreeing publicly with Netanyahu, and they may have been able to call him out if the prime minister were to block a potential hostage deal for personal political reasons. With Gantz gone, that seems less likely \u2014 as does the likelihood of a hostage deal being consummated any time soon.\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/middleeast\/live-news\/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news-06-09-24\/index.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gone from the war cabinet.
