In October, we shift our focus to the offbeat, highlighting everything from (allegedly) haunted spaces to abandoned places.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite vossi-source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location vossi-source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"\/><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-63acd267b520cc240b50e76b56e3bbbf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In March 2022, the world let out a collective gasp when the remarkably preserved shipwreck of Ernest Shackleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/story-behind-shackleton-endurance-shipwreck\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">HMS Endurance was discovered<\/a> almost two miles beneath the icy Antarctic seas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-444a37d9ee7098cbcc05753a76b6b9ec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But scores more sunken vessels remain on the ocean floor, awaiting rediscovery.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-d9409807b0762d69883022b7855208a3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here are some of the world\u2019s most infamously elusive shipwrecks, plus a few you can see for yourself (some without even getting wet).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-9279c100d1a6f302be2be885f4609d96@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A lowly cabin boy shouldered the blame for the sinking of Christopher Columbus\u2019 Santa Maria flagship off the coast of Haiti on Christmas Eve 1492. The inexperienced sailor is said to have taken the wheel after Columbus went for a nap, and shortly after wrote off the ship by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2014\/05\/13\/archaeologist-likely-solves-500-year-old-mystery-of-christopher-columbuss-missing-santa-maria\/\" target=\"_blank\">crashing it into a coral reef<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f82b35221f40a3f0020aa0f1ee0480d3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s one theory, anyway. But given its mammoth size \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/the-dollar26-billion-treasure-still-lost-at-the-bottom-of-the-sea\" target=\"_blank\">118 feet-long and 111-feet-high<\/a> \u2013 it was an unwieldy beast to captain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f47d2d28c10c9992c10195a17bb91198@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps it was only a matter of time before the Flor de la Mar went down, which it did in a heavy storm off Sumatra, Indonesia in 1511.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-39be627f921bbc484f3c995dc194090a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most of the crew perished, and its booty \u2013 said to include the entire personal fortune of a Portuguese governor, worth a cool $2.6 billion in today\u2019s money \u2013 was lost.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-a798ac553c9e215b924d316299ac0e07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recently, a fictionalized version of the pirate Zheng Yi Sao went in search of the treasure on an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalworld.com\/culture\/television\/doctor-who-legend-of-the-sea-devils-real-life-pirate-madame-ching-crystal-yu-ching-shih-zheng-yi-sao-3656499\" target=\"_blank\">episode of British sci-fi series \u201cDoctor Who,\u201d<\/a> only to unleash the dreaded Sea Devils.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-ba6bd51b8be05645354ad95079941f31@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may not have its own theme song sung by Celine Dion, but the SS Waratah is known as \u201cAustralia\u2019s Titanic\u201d \u2013 and for good reason.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-d63cc1566a8c5da61dca10207a938aa5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A passenger cargo ship built to travel between Europe and Australia with a stopover in Africa, the Waratah disappeared shortly after steaming off from the city of Durban in present-day South Africa in 1909 \u2013 just three years before the Titanic tragedy. As for the cause, theories abound.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-6fae92b7b5a2a7225430a79f23fc51a1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The entire liner, complete with eight staterooms, music lounge and all 211 passengers and crew, was never found. Ninety years after the Waratah went down, the National Underwater and Marine Agency thought they\u2019d finally found it, but it was a false alarm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f9815081571e1a57e87e8b16697a6cb2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Said the late thriller writer Clive Cussler, who spent much of his life searching for the wreck, \u201cI guess she is going to continue to be elusive a while longer.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-2d085a03b5c5d40af81122c52bef62fd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rotten Tomatoes\u2019 \u201cTomatometer\u201d might rack up a rancid 17% for the 2016 Nicolas Cage movie, \u201cUSS Indianapolis: Men of Courage,\u201d but in real life, the ship played a game-ending role in World War II.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-8c6448dc8a2bb862188dac8cd75414bd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Indianapolis was chosen to transport the uranium core of the \u201cLittle Boy\u201d nuclear bomb to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomicheritage.org\/location\/tinian-island\" target=\"_blank\">Tinian Island<\/a>, where the weapon was assembled shortly before being used to devastating effect on Hiroshima.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-c34cb955c64e5cd711221e420ef85d1e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The drop-off of the deadly cargo went without a hitch, but on its return journey, the Indianapolis was hit by a Japanese sub, with many crew members perishing from shark attacks and salt poisoning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-d17b4a1636dda40e2395086eca300dcb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The exact whereabouts of the warship remained a mystery for decades, but <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2017\/08\/19\/us\/uss-indianapolis-wreckage-found\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">was finally located <\/a>by a team led by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, in 2017 \u2013 18,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/image-4209b909cfb9da551fddc834d6de6788@published\" class=\"image data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not just one shipwreck, but an entire ghastly genre of them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-9e8d82819b9d423528077755ec732361@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s estimated some 1,000 ships now on the bottom of the ocean were complicit in the wicked \u201ctriangular trade\u201d across the Atlantic that saw some 12-13 million Africans forced into slavery.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-7e21f291b43639400d1ee1df1851e134@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many of these ships sank in turbulent weather, such as the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/newsdesk\/factsheets\/history-s-o-jos-slave-ship-and-site\" target=\"_blank\"> S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9<\/a>, which went down off the coast of South Africa in 1794.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-a928da5609bf215910f4dd1dad38fb0f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Others, like the Clotilda, were purposefully scuttled by their owners, to cover up evidence of slave trading, long after the 1807 Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-9b43178aecab2330d1e85fd4eef5028a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The wrecks of both these vessels have now been located \u2013 the S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 thanks to the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/divingwithapurpose.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diving With a Purpose<\/a> (DWP), a group of largely Black scuba divers who dive on the sites of sunken slave ships, and bring the likes of rusted manacles and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/lubkemann-shipwreck-sao-jose.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> iron ballasts<\/a> to the surface.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-2a56093f0fc8863b150f77a3e9e0e4e8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s impossible to retrieve such objects without also dredging up stories of human suffering, although DWP\u2019s goal is to document slavery\u2019s nefarious legacy, using it to educate and enlighten.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-efca6f9c64ce6a1402dc908ed0516f1a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, such ships are notoriously elusive, and many may never see the light of day again.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-0915c34529e2a6592f096a68dac06509@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mehmed \u00c7akir was diving for sponges off the coast of Yal\u0131kavak, Turkey in 1982, when he happened upon the remains of a trading ship that had sunk here some 3,000 years previous.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-c9f0813b1b5047dcf9940da6efb1d4bf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His was the first of many dives \u2013 over 22,400 in fact \u2013 to bring up the long-lost treasures of the Uluburun, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhistory.org\/Uluburun_Shipwreck\/\" target=\"_blank\">what a haul it was<\/a>; 10 tons of copper ingots; 70,000 glass and faience beads; olive oil and pomegranates stored in Cypriot pottery jars.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-7f41cb2a36355c168fc1dccf47fe36e6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some of the horde can now be seen at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodrum-museum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology<\/a>, and while not much of the Bronze Age wreck survives, there\u2019s a cross section reconstruction, which gives a feel for how it would have been stacked with all those goods, all those centuries ago.\n data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The black hull of this Greek sugar-carrying boat, rolled onto its side, is a favorite perch for feathered residents of a nearby bird sanctuary \u2013 and has been, since the ship went down in a squall in January 1974.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s said no one took responsibility for the so-called \u201csugar boat,\u201d hence why it\u2019s still wedged into a sandbank \u2013 a gauche reminder take maritime rubberneckers up close, while pouring them a hot chocolate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If scuba diving is what floats your boat, chances are you\u2019ve heard of Chuuk Lagoon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-36d65cbe1052d812d769a8dc94c93a2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With most of them still down there, Chuuk Lagoon has become a mawkish subaquatic museum for divers to gawk at barnacled tanks from the <a href=\"https:\/\/xray-mag.com\/content\/san-francisco-maru-wreck-chuuk-lagoon\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco Maru<\/a> or the long-abandoned compass and engine telegraphs of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.submerged.co.uk\/nippo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nippo Maru.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/subheader-4a8ec0e242232b3a510299b532eeaa4a@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\"
