{"id":7582,"date":"2026-02-28T16:34:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T16:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=7582"},"modified":"2026-02-28T16:34:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T16:34:18","slug":"iron-river-mexicos-cartel-violence-fuelled-by-trafficked-firearms-from-us-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=7582","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Iron river\u2019: Mexico\u2019s cartel violence fuelled by trafficked firearms from US | Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><span style=\"color:var(--drop-cap);font-weight:500\" class=\"dcr-15rw6c2\">M<\/span>exico was rocked this week by a wave of brutal violence after the capture of the drug lord Nemesio Rub\u00e9n Oseguera Cervantes, AKA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/feb\/23\/who-was-el-mencho-drug-cartel-boss-killed-mexico\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cEl Mencho\u201d<\/a>, as members of his powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel blew up trucks, fired on police stations and engaged in gun battles with Mexican security forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The chaos eventually calmed but not before 62 people had been killed, including a pregnant woman caught in the cross fire. The scale of the carnage, as well as the arsenal involved, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/02\/23\/el-mencho-guns-united-states-mexico\/88828828007\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">underscored<\/a> a key element of Mexico\u2019s struggle against organised crime: cartels are armed to the teeth, and most of their weapons are trafficked from the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As the smoke from the burning blockades cleared, Mexico\u2019s defence minister, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, said the vast majority of weapons seized after El Mencho\u2019s capture \u2013 including a Barrett rifle, a rocket launcher, grenades and mortar rounds \u2013 had come from across the border. But in the US, loose gun legislation and a national obsession with firearms mean guns are readily available to buy and traffic south of the border.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"ac875d84-c98e-4c20-a88c-dbefb5021927\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">A soldier stands guard by a charred vehicle after it was set on fire in Cointzio, Michoac\u00e1n state, on Sunday.<\/span> Photograph: Armando Solis\/AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOur country\u2019s lax gun laws have created a deadly, vicious cycle of firearms trafficking that\u2019s riddled with violence and chaos,\u201d said the Democratic senator Dick Durbin last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durbin.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/durbin-castro-introduce-bill-to-curb-firearms-trafficking-from-the-united-states-to-mexican-drug-cartels\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">as he announced a bill<\/a> to tackle arms smuggling. \u201cOur gun laws and gun industry practices fuel an iron river of firearms trafficking that supplies Mexican drug cartels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Durbin\u2019s bill, introduced with the Democratic congressman Joaqu\u00edn Castro, has yet to come up for a vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Conservative estimates suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/heres-how-we-figured-the-number-of-guns-illegally-trafficked-from-the-us-across-the-border-to-mexico-255074\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">135,000 guns<\/a> are trafficked into Mexico annually, though some studies suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/portales.sre.gob.mx\/acervo\/images\/Litigio_armas\/Respuesta_del_Gobierno_de_Mexico\/Exhibit__1_Expert_Report_Lucy_Allen.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">as many as 730,000 American<\/a> firearms are smuggled into Mexico every year. That would mean 2,000 US guns crossing the border every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While large gun stores are important suppliers of firearms that end up in Mexico, 83%of these <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/us-gun-trafficking-to-mexico-independent-gun-shops-supply-the-most-dangerous-weapons-254974\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">weapons come from independent gun dealers<\/a> in border states such as Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and California. The most powerful guns also come from these smaller stores, including .50-caliber sniper rifles and 7.62mm assault-style weapons.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"640b4753-d215-4fb4-a4c4-200a42be5cbd\" data-spacefinder-role=\"supporting\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-a2pvoh\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-9ktzqp\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">A sign in Nogales, Arizona, warning people not to take weapons when crossing into Mexico from the US.<\/span> Photograph: Christina Felschen\/Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At times, these powerful weapons are smuggled across the border en masse: last year, US authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/father-and-son-arrested-attempting-smuggle-hundreds-firearms-mexico\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">arrested<\/a> a father and son in Texas who together were attempting to smuggle \u201c300 rifles and pistols as well as various caliber ammunition and magazines\u201d into Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But the vast majority of weapons are trafficked into Mexico piecemeal, with guns and ammunition divided up among multiple smugglers, making it difficult for authorities on either side of the border to find and seize the weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt is very easy to hide a gun in a vehicle without being detected and it is very difficult to stop every single car and every single truck,\u201d said Ieva Jusionyte, a professor at Brown University who has studied arms trafficking to Mexico. \u201cIt\u2019s like trying to find a needle in a haystack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Still, analysts say the main problem is not at the border: it is in Washington, where a well-funded gun lobby has halted progress on any meaningful regulation for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cCertainly, Mexico and Mexican customs need to do much more to prevent those guns from coming into Mexican territory,\u201d said Arturo Sarukh\u00e1n, a former Mexican ambassador to Washington. \u201cBut at the end of the day it\u2019s the loopholes in how you can buy guns in gun shows and gun shops in the US that are allowing proxy purchases of firearms that are then illegally trafficked over international borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mexico is keenly aware of the problem: Sheinbaum has repeatedly called on the US to do more to halt the southbound flow of weapons. \u201cThe topic always comes up in meetings, and I\u2019ve brought it up in phone conversations with President Trump,\u201d she said earlier this month. \u201cThe issue of weapons entering Mexico from the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"0fb6cfcf-6676-4b6e-9d98-113e627e4473\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which was led by El Mencho, take part in firearms training at an undisclosed location in Michoacan state, Mexico, in 2022. <\/span> Photograph: Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In 2021, the Mexican government filed a lawsuit against eight gun manufacturers, accusing them of \u201cnegligent marketing, distribution and sales\u201d. The US supreme court ruled unanimously last year to reject the suit, based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c1dez6rwz07o\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a 2005 law that<\/a> shields gunmakers from liability if their weapons are misused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Still, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Trump administration<\/a> appears to be stepping up its efforts to stop the weapons from entering Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said it had seized 4,359 guns and 648,975 rounds of ammunition \u201cbound for Mexico\u201d since January last year.
