{"id":7669,"date":"2026-02-28T18:45:37","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T18:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=7669"},"modified":"2026-02-28T18:45:37","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T18:45:37","slug":"democrats-push-to-curb-trumps-war-authority-after-iran-strikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignnewstoday.com\/?p=7669","title":{"rendered":"Democrats Push To Curb Trump\u2019s War Authority After Iran Strikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative\" data-narration-container=\"true\">\n<p>Democrat lawmakers are demanding a vote to limit President Donald Trump\u2019s war powers following the United States\u2019 strikes against Iran.<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) promised to compel a vote on the War Powers Resolution introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe framers of the United States Constitution gave Congress the sole power to declare war as the branch of government closest to the American people,\u201d Jeffries said in a statement. He added that Iran is a \u201cbad actor\u201d that must be \u201caggressively confronted for its human rights violations,\u201d but said the Trump administration should have sought congressional approval.<\/p>\n<p>The War Powers Resolution would prohibit U.S. hostilities in Iran without the approval of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/2027765113617277225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement on X that \u201cIran must never be allowed to attain a nuclear weapon but the American people do not want another endless and costly war in the Middle East when there are so many problems at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The minority leader added that the administration must answer many questions about the scope of this operation, and said President Trump\u2019s \u201cfitful cycles of lashing out and risking wider conflict are not a viable strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Senate should quickly return to session and reassert its constitutional duty by passing our resolution to enforce the War Powers Act,\u201d Schumer concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) said the administration is at risk of repeating \u201cmistakes of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran\u2019s leadership has long supported terrorism across the region, undermined regional stability, continued to advance its nuclear ambitions, and brutally repressed its own people,\u201d Warner said in a statement. \u201cBut acknowledging those realities does not relieve any president of the responsibility to act within the law, with a clear strategy, and with Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) called the attack \u201cillegal and unconstitutional\u201d and pushed for a vote on a War Powers Resolution in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA diplomatic solution remains the best way to permanently and verifiably prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon,\u201d Markey said. \u201cNo more war with Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/live-updates-iranian-protests-intensify-as-citizens-demand-end-to-ayatollah-rule?topStoryPosition=undefined&amp;author=Daily+Wire&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=1&amp;rowHeadline=Top+Stories&amp;rowType=Top+Stories&amp;title=LIVE+UPDATES%3A+United+States+And+Israel+Strike+Iran+In+\u2018Operation+Epic+Fury\u2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Follow The Daily Wire\u2019s live-blog coverage of the U.S. strikes on Iran.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), who co-sponsored the Iran War Powers Resolution in the Senate, called the strikes \u201ca colossal mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Senate should immediately return to session and vote on my War Powers Resolution to block the use of U.S. special forces in hostilities against Iran,\u201d Kaine said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) agreed with Kaine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrikes are underway and Congress hasn\u2019t voted,\u201d Gallego said. \u201cNo President gets to drag working-class Americans into another war without authorization. Bring the Senate back. Take the vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like the resolution in the House, Kaine\u2019s Iran War Powers Resolution would prohibit any U.S. participation in hostilities against Iran unless authorized by Congress. A similar resolution was introduced and defeated last June after the Trump administration obliterated Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to various politicians coming out against the strikes, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin released a statement condemning Trump\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOvernight and without congressional approval, Donald Trump initiated major combat operations against Iran,\u201d the statement begins. \u201cTrump sold voters on a \u2018pro-peace\u2019 vision of himself as an America First candidate, yet in under 13 months, he has ordered strikes on seven foreign nations and plunged our country into more open-ended conflict using taxpayer dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin added that while Iran sanctions terrorism and undermines human rights, \u201cour nation deserves better than a government that shoots first and asks questions later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some Democrats, like Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenFettermanPA\/status\/2027674658091204808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Fetterman<\/a> (D-PA), have broken with their party to praise the strikes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump has been willing to do what\u2019s right and necessary to produce real peace in the region,\u201d Fetterman said in a post on X. \u201cGod bless the United States, our great military, and Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/capitol-clash-democrats-push-to-curb-trumps-war-authority-after-iran-strikes\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrat lawmakers are demanding a vote to limit President Donald Trump\u2019s war powers following the United States\u2019 strikes against Iran.
