Roughly 4 million workers receive tips, according to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/budgetlab.yale.edu\/news\/240624\/no-tax-tips-act-background-tipped-workers\" rel=\"sponsored\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Yale Budget Lab;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Yale Budget Lab<\/a>.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->The idea of \u201cno tax on tips\u201d first gained traction on the campaign trail, where Trump repeatedly pitched the concept as a way to put more money back in the pockets of service workers.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->That message stuck \u2014 and eventually made its way into the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law in July 2025.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Other <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/personal-finance\/taxes\/article\/your-tax-refund-may-be-bigger-this-year-heres-why-152025333.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:OBBBA tax changes;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">OBBBA tax changes<\/a> are rolling out this year too, including no tax on overtime and a $6,000 boost to the standard deduction for taxpayers age 65 and older.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Tips have always been reported separately from regular income on a W-2. Generally, all credit and debit card tips are reported on your W-2 already because your employer processes them through the payroll system.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201cAll the information you need has always been reported on your W-2,\u201d said Patel. \u201cIt\u2019s the same reporting \u2014 it just enters your tax form slightly differently.\u201d<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->How do you report it? Look at your W-2:<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->So use Box 7 of your W-2 (or Box 14 if your employer specifically labeled them) as the basis for your deduction.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201cPeople aren\u2019t used to paying attention to the box that reports tip income separately because it hasn\u2019t mattered much before,\u201d said Patel. This year it does.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->But what if your employer didn\u2019t enter your tips in Box 7? In that case, you\u2019ll need to report them based on what\u2019s listed on your last paystub of 2025.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->One potential challenge with the deduction is recordkeeping. If you didn\u2019t track your tips carefully in 2025, it can be harder to separate voluntary tips, which qualify, from mandatory service charges, which don\u2019t.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201cIn this case, the worker and their tax preparer may have to go through paystubs or additional documentation from the worker&#8217;s employer to determine which tips are considered qualified,\u201d said Logan Allec, a CPA and owner of Clarita CPA Group in Santa Clarita, Calif.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Next year, the process for reporting your tips should be easier, said Allec.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201cThe W-2 will be updated so that tipped workers know exactly the amount of their qualified tips,\u201d he said.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Starting this year, calendar year 2026, you can choose to have less tax taken out of your tips thanks to updated IRS tables. To make sure your paycheck reflects these savings, you must fill out the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/fw4.pdf\" rel=\"sponsored\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:new 2026 W-4;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">new 2026 W-4<\/a> and get it to your manager or HR rep as soon as possible.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->If you decide to update your W-4, you\u2019ll take home more money each paycheck. But because less tax is withheld during the year, your refund will likely be smaller next year, or you might even owe money.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->If you don\u2019t like the sound of that, don\u2019t worry about updating your W-4. But now, it can cost you.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Throughout the year, you want to maintain a daily log where you track all your cash tips. By the 10th of each month, report the prior month\u2019s tips if they total $20 or more. Doing so can help you deduct more at tax time.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Missed reporting your cash during the year?
