The new Game of Thrones movie is set to be a prequel, which has people wondering when exactly this series will be set in the long history of Westeros. A Game of Thrones movie has always been in the ether, but with the success of HOTD and AKOTSK, it felt like HBO had reestablished its Ice & Fire TV credentials.
Then, in February 2026, it was suddenly revealed that writer/director Beau Willimon was beginning work on a Game of Thrones movie based on Aegon’s Conquest of Westeros. It’s a pivotal moment in the lore and will take viewers to a time period that has never been covered before.
When The Game Of Thrones Movie Takes Place Compared To All Three TV Shows
The Game of Thrones universe has been almost entirely set within the years demarcated as “AC”. Save for a flashback here or there, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are all set at some point in “AC”, which means “After the Conquest”, referring to Aegon’s Conquest.

House of the Dragon begins in 101 AC with King Jaehaerys I selecting an heir and inadvertently setting off the Dance of Dragons civil war, which begins in 129 AC and goes until 131 AC. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set in 209 AC. The Game of Thrones prologue begins in 297 AC.
The GOT books end in the year 300 AC, with Daenerys in Meereen as its queen, which means the show probably ends sometime around 302 AC-305 AC. This new Game of Thrones film is the earliest we’ve seen Westeros, and while parts of it may be recognizable, a lot of it is going to be completely new.
The New Game Of Thrones Movie Will Depict Aegon’s Conquest
The Game of Thrones movie will follow Aegon’s Conquest, a pivotal moment in the history of Westeros, but also one that hasn’t necessarily affected the events of the three shows. Yes, the conquest brings the Targaryens to Westeros, who are the de facto main characters of the series, but the Conquest was always something ancient and almost mythical.
Aegon Targaryen, the first of his name, comes to Westeros with his three massive dragons, one of which we’ve already met: Vhagar, which means she is a very old dragon during the events of House of the Dragon. Most of the events of the film will likely take place before 1 AC, however.
In the books, the AC years start after Aegon is crowned in a hill fort that will eventually grow to be King’s Landing, which is after his conquest. The Game of Thrones movie will likely be more concerned with his actual conquering, perhaps ending with his crowning on the Iron Throne.
