Update — 7:40AM EST: Bayern confirms injury
Bayern Munich released a statement on Manuel Neuer’s status, which does not provide much additional detail aside of a confirmation that Neuer has a muscle tear and will be “out of action”:
Manuel Neuer suffered a minor muscle tear in his left calf during Bayern’s 4-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, as confirmed following a thorough examination by the club’s medical department. The club captain and goalkeeper has therefore been ruled out of action.
According to a report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich expects goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to be unavailable for the team’s Champions League Round of 16 match vs. Atalanta.

Neuer, who reportedly tweaked an existing calf issue in a 4-1 win over Gladbach on Friday. does not have an official diagnosis yet, but his status is in extreme doubt. If he misses the game., Jonas Urbig is expected to start:
Bayern expect Manuel Neuer to be unavailable in the first leg against Atalanta. The captain underwent a scan after last night’s game. An official diagnosis is still pending. Jonas Urbig will most likely start in goal on Tuesday.
It can be argued that it reckless or — at least — irresponsible to allow Neuer to play against Gladbach after already dealing with a calf problem. Now, Bayern Munich will enter the Champions League without its captain.
Will Urbig be up to the task?
