The Pokémon games franchise celebrated an incredible 30-year anniversary on February 27, 2026. For decades, the series has brought the joy of monster collecting and battling to multiple generations of fans. There have been some incredible leaps in quality, visuals, and gameplay.
For some, though, the original Kanto region of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow remains the most beloved generation of all time. For the 30th anniversary, Nintendo re-released Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen. If that isn’t enough, you can take the games on a new adventure through fan-made content.
There are hundreds of Pokémon ROM hacks that introduce new twists on the original story and location. These ROM hacks completely reinvent the Kanto region and let long-time fans feel like they’re playing the first Pokémon games for the first time all over again.
Pokémon PureRGB
An Upgrade That Stays True To The Originals
A lot of Pokémon ROM hacks add Pokémon, change the story, and otherwise overhaul the original games they’re based on. This is not the case for Pokémon PureRGB. This hack from Vortiene can be accessed on GitHub, and presents fans with a rework that’s faithful to its origins.
This Pokémon hack upgrades and combines the Red, Blue and Japan-exclusive Green editions of the game. Unlike many other ROMs, this one doesn’t add any new Pokémon, types, or mechanics from future generations.
Instead, the hack makes tweaks and improvements to the originals. This includes tweaks and updates to “useless” moves to make them more useful, additional sections to the Pokédex that detail things like moves and Pokémon locations, and plenty of quality of life updates that make the game more enjoyable.
The hack even keeps original bugs intact (because MissingNo is a part of the gameplay experience at this point), and adds several Easter eggs (like the Mew under the truck!) and some end-game content.
Pokémon Fire Red Extended
Catch ‘Em All, Literally
The first Pokémon games included 151 original creatures to find and collect. Every game released since then has added many new Pokémon unique to that region. With Gen 10 announced for 2027 as Pokémon Winds & Waves, the number of different Pokémon is now in the thousands.
The Fire Red Extended hack by DjTarma on PokéCommunity aims to bring them all into one game. This hack uses the original Kanto region of the first games, but makes all Pokémon from generations one through nine available to capture. This includes all regional and gender variations.
With this hack, you’ll also have 27 different starters to choose from, special events and secret new locations to explore, and a new and improved Safari Zone, to name just a few. If you love the original Pokémon game experience, but wish it had more Pokémon to find, then this might just be the perfect hack for you.
Pokémon Radical Red
Bump Up The Difficulty
Radical Red is, at its heart, a difficulty ROM hack. Creator soupercell on PokéCommunity was hoping to create an experience that’s fun, but also much more challenging than the original games were.
The hack improves and strengthens Pokémon across the board, but especially boss trainers and legendary battles. Trainers for important fights will now be able to choose from a few teams, while players will be barred from using their items during gym battles and a few other key fights.
To prevent the game from getting too easy anyway due to over-leveling, the hack introduces a soft level cap based on the player’s next boss battle. And all these features are just the tip of the iceberg with Radical Red.
Besides these core upgrades, the hack makes a few additional QOL and general updates. It introduces all Pokémon from Gen 1 through 8, makes TMs reusable, adds a day-night cycle, a DexNav that lets you search for hidden features, and more.
Pokémon FireRed: Rocket Edition
Adventure In The POV Of A Team Rocket Grunt
When you play through Pokémon Red or Blue, you do so through the point of view of a plucky young boy, and the hero of the story. The Rocket Edition ROM hack flips this around and lets you experience the game through the eyes of a villain.
Created by colonelsalt on its own dedicated website, Pokémon FireRed: Rocket Edition places players in the shoes of a Team Rocket grunt. Work your way through the Kanto region from the perspective of the bad guy, and all the moral dilemmas that come with it.
Why wander through tall grass fighting and capturing Pokémon, when you can simply wait for other trainers to do the job for you… and then steal them! In this hack, you have the ability to steal one Pokémon from every trainer you defeat along your path to baddie greatness.
Discover a whole new story and lore as you work your way up through the ranks of the criminal organization, Team Rocket. As you reach new ranks in the gang, you’ll unlock the ability to steal higher-level and -strength Pokémon, including ones from well-known characters from the show and game.
You might be a bad guy, but that doesn’t mean you’re a bad guy. Branching dialogue trees allow every player to make their own decisions through a morality system. QOL improvements like the ability to fly and run from the start of the game round out this must-try ROM hack for Kanto fans.
Pokémon Roaming Red
The Open World Pokémon Game Fans Have Always Wanted
Pokémon Winds & Waves looks to be an open-world game with free exploration. By contrast, the first games in the series forced players into a guided, pre-determined route. Paths were blocked by trees, rocks, and entire bodies of water, making free traversal impossible.
Pokémon Roaming Red by The Shadow Knight on PokéCommunity asks: What if the original Kanto was a wide open world? The ROM hack transforms Pokémon Red into a sandbox exploration game by eliminating most of the progression blockers.
Players can start from any of the towns in the Kanto region and move around without limits. Wild Pokémon, trainer battles, and gym battles scale with the player’s level, ensuring an engaging experience anywhere in the region, no matter what.
Pokémon Crystal Clear
It’s Like A Completely New Game
Where Pokémon PureRGB tries to keep as much of the original game intact as possible, Pokémon Crystal Clear does the exact opposite. This ROM hack, shared on GitHub by ShockSlayer, is a completely reworked and overhauled version of Kanto and Johto.
While the GitHub page has a massive amount of documentation about the hack, the Discord server is where to go for download instructions and links.
The hack features brand-new mechanics, useful QOL updates, and so much more. It combines the first and second generations into one cohesive, open-world game with a vast amount of customization.
You can begin your journey at any of the towns across the two regions, and choose from 30 different starters with custom moves. (For a real challenge, why not start your game with Magikarp?)
No matter where you start, every player gets their own residence, which they can decorate with items bought from a new bazaar. Besides this, everything from your bag to your sprite and colors can be customized to your liking.
The game has 16 gyms that scale with the player’s level and can be tackled in any order. You can even re-do matches to hone your skills. More events, trainers, and special features make Pokémon Crystal Clear one of the most robuse Pokémon ROM hacks for Kanto region fans.
