كشفت وسائل إعلام غربية- حسب مصادر وصفتها بالمطلعة- أن إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب تستعد للموافقة على حزمة تسليح كبيرة لتايوان، تتضمن صواريخ اعتراض متطورة، في صفقة قد تبلغ قيمتها نحو 14 مليار دولار، لتصبح الأكبر في تاريخ مبيعات السلاح الأمريكية للجزيرة.
وذكرت المصادر أن الصفقة جاهزة للتوقيع، لكن الإعلان عنها قد يتم بعد عودة ترمب من زيارته المرتقبة إلى الصين بين 31 مارس و2 أبريل، حيث من المقرر أن يلتقي بالرئيس الصيني شي جين بينغ في بكين.
وتأتي هذه الخطوة في وقت تواجه فيه تايوان ضغوطاً عسكرية متزايدة من الصين، التي تعتبر الجزيرة جزءاً من أراضيها، وتعارض بشدة أي صفقات سلاح أمريكية معها.
وبحسب أحد المصادر، تتضمن الحزمة بشكل أساسي صواريخ دفاع جوي من طراز PAC-3 إضافة إلى أنظمة NASAMS، وهي من بين أكثر أنظمة الدفاع الجوي تطوراً.
وأشار المصدر إلى أن جميع الإجراءات الخاصة بالصفقة قد اكتملت، وأن الإعلان الرسمي عنها يمكن أن يتم فور منح الرئيس الأمريكي الموافقة النهائية عليها.
كما كشف مصدر آخر أن هناك حزمة إضافية بقيمة نحو 6 مليارات دولار من القدرات الدفاعية غير التقليدية أو ما يعرف بالقدرات غير المتكافئة، قد يتم الإعلان عنها لاحقاً ضمن صفقات مرتبطة، لكنه لم يحدد طبيعة هذه الأنظمة.
قلق في تايوان وترقب للقمة
ويأتي التحرك الأمريكي في وقت أثارت فيه مساعي ترمب لإبرام اتفاق تجاري مع الصين مخاوف بعض المراقبين من احتمال تقليص الدعم العسكري الأمريكي لتايوان.
لكن الاستعداد لإقرار هذه الصفقة يشير إلى أن واشنطن تعتزم الحفاظ على دعمها العسكري لتايبيه وربما زيادته، الأمر الذي من شأنه أن يخفف من القلق في تايوان بشأن مستقبل العلاقة الدفاعية مع الولايات المتحدة.
وفي الوقت نفسه، قال مصدر مطلع إن بكين تحاول تأجيل مبيعات السلاح الأمريكية للجزيرة وتسعى لتهيئة أجواء أكثر هدوءاً قبل القمة المرتقبة بين «ترمب – شي جين بينغ»، بما في ذلك تخفيف الضغوط العسكرية حول تايوان.
موقف صيني رافض
وأكدت وزارة الخارجية الصينية في بيان أن موقف بكين المعارض لبيع الولايات المتحدة أسلحة لتايوان ثابت وواضح، مطالبة واشنطن بوقف هذه الصفقات.
من جانبها، أكدت الإدارة الأمريكية أن مبيعات السلاح تمر حالياً بالإجراءات المعتادة، مشددة على أن سياسة واشنطن تجاه تايوان لم تتغير.
دعم أمريكي مستمر
وتشير تقديرات إلى أن مبيعات السلاح التي وافق عليها ترمب لتايوان خلال ولايته الثانية تجاوزت بالفعل تلك التي أقرتها إدارة الرئيس السابق جو بايدن خلال أربع سنوات، بما في ذلك صفقة بقيمة 11 مليار دولار تمت الموافقة عليها في ديسمبر الماضي وشملت صواريخ وطائرات مسيّرة ومدفعية وقطع غيار للطائرات.
ويرى محللون أن الإدارات الأمريكية المتعاقبة اعتادت توقيت إعلانات صفقات الأسلحة لتايوان بعناية، خصوصا في الفترات التي تشهد تواصلاً سياسياً حساساً مع بكين.
وفي تايبيه، أكدت مصادر مطلعة أن واشنطن طمأنت الحكومة التايوانية مراراً باستمرار دعمها الدفاعي للجزيرة، في وقت تتابع فيه السلطات التايوانية عن كثب نتائج القمة المرتقبة بين ترامب وشي جين بينغ.
Western media outlets have revealed—according to sources described as knowledgeable—that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to approve a large arms package for Taiwan, which includes advanced interceptor missiles, in a deal that could be worth around $14 billion, making it the largest in the history of U.S. arms sales to the island.
The sources indicated that the deal is ready for signing, but the announcement may occur after Trump returns from his anticipated visit to China between March 31 and April 2, where he is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
This move comes at a time when Taiwan is facing increasing military pressure from China, which considers the island part of its territory and strongly opposes any U.S. arms deals with it.
According to one source, the package primarily includes PAC-3 air defense missiles in addition to NASAMS systems, which are among the most advanced air defense systems.
The source noted that all procedures related to the deal have been completed, and the official announcement could be made as soon as the U.S. president gives final approval.
Another source revealed that there is an additional package worth around $6 billion of unconventional defense capabilities, or what is known as asymmetric capabilities, which may be announced later as part of related deals, although the nature of these systems was not specified.
Concerns in Taiwan and Anticipation for the Summit
The U.S. move comes at a time when Trump’s efforts to reach a trade agreement with China have raised concerns among some observers about the possibility of reduced U.S. military support for Taiwan.
However, the readiness to approve this deal indicates that Washington intends to maintain its military support for Taipei and possibly increase it, which could alleviate concerns in Taiwan regarding the future of its defense relationship with the United States.
At the same time, an informed source stated that Beijing is trying to delay U.S. arms sales to the island and is seeking to create a calmer atmosphere before the anticipated summit between “Trump and Xi Jinping,” including easing military pressures around Taiwan.
Chinese Rejection
The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement that Beijing’s opposition to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan is firm and clear, demanding that Washington halt these deals.
For its part, the U.S. administration affirmed that arms sales are currently going through the usual procedures, emphasizing that Washington’s policy towards Taiwan has not changed.
Ongoing U.S. Support
Estimates indicate that the arms sales approved by Trump for Taiwan during his second term have already surpassed those approved by the administration of former President Joe Biden over four years, including an $11 billion deal approved last December that included missiles, drones, artillery, and aircraft spare parts.
Analysts believe that successive U.S. administrations have carefully timed announcements of arms deals for Taiwan, especially during periods of sensitive political communication with Beijing.
In Taipei, informed sources confirmed that Washington has repeatedly reassured the Taiwanese government of its continued defensive support for the island, as Taiwanese authorities closely monitor the outcomes of the upcoming summit between Trump and Xi Jinping.
