This opinion piece reflects on the role played by veteran liberation struggle leader Patrick Mosiuoa ‘Terror’ Lekota in rebuilding the African National Congress (ANC) in the early 1990s following the unbanning of liberation movements and the release of Nelson Mandela. Amid intense political violence in the then Natal province, Lekota emerged as a fearless organiser and mobiliser who worked with other leaders to rebuild ANC structures, establish branches and strengthen the organisation during one of its most volatile periods. The article recalls his leadership in conflict-affected communities, his later deployment to rebuild ANC structures in the Free State, and his eventual role in national politics, including his move from Free State premier to Parliament following the creation of the National Council of Provinces.
