Another understanding of the word schadenfreude is that it comes from a place of envy, jealousy or a sense of injustice. It’s seen as the righting of a cosmic wrong: giving someone their “just desserts” or “bringing them down a peg”. As an incredibly talented, good-looking man, who is still only 30 years of age, it’s no surprise to me that many would be jealous of Chalamet. His career to date has been a glorious mix of blockbuster (the Dune films), arthouse (Call Me By Your Name) and family-friendly (Little Women, Wonka); he’s a fashion boy with Chrome Hearts, Haider Ackerman and Givenchy on speed-dial; and he’s one half of the most talked-about Gen Z celebrity couples – something he has played up during awards season, to many naysayers’ ire.
