Monarch: Legacy of Monsters added a confusing new element to Mothra’s history in Legendary’s Monsterverse. A brief scene in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 3 offered a handful of interesting Easter eggs, including references to James Conrad from Kong: Skull Island, King Ghidorah, and Mothra.
Between Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the Monsterverse has been able to build a great deal of lore around its interpretation of humanity’s ancient guardian. King of the Monsters revealed how Monarch first became aware of Mothra’s existence, with the 2024 film then throwing in a twist, confirming that there was another Mothra egg Monarch didn’t know about.
Now, it’s possible that there’s even more to the story that Godzilla and Kong’s movies have yet to discuss.
When May is looking at the Monarch files that APEX has access to in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 3, a quick look is shown at one marked, “Titanus Mosura.” The corresponding time and location listed next to the name are April 6, 2001 and New York City. This suggests that there was some sort of event pertaining to Mothra in New York City in 2001.
This is a surprising detail, given that this does not match what the Monsterverse has thus far revealed about the discovery of Mothra. The Mothra egg that hatched at the beginning of Godzilla: King of the Monsters is known to have been uncovered by Monarch in China in 2009.
What this indicates is that somehow, APEX Cypernetics learned about Mothra’s presence in the Monsterverse eight years prior to when Monarch found her in the temple in the Yunnan Province of China. APEX, which is more focused on technology than exploration, would be an unlikely candidate for discovering Mothra.
What Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters’ Mothra Easter Egg Could Really Mean
As for why APEX even has a “Titanus Mosura” listed in its records ahead of her official discovery in 2009 goes to show that Titan experts likely had some level of awareness of her before the egg was found. That makes sense, as Godzilla: King of the Monsters did tease that Dr. Ilene Chen’s family has a long history with Mothra.
Monarch (and APEX) may have known about Mothra for years, but didn’t lay eyes on the egg until 2009. It’s possible that a clue was unearthed in 2001, which may or may not have something to do with Dr. Ilene Chen’s mother and grandmother, who were both Monarch operatives.
Since she and her family are essentially the Monsterverse’s twist on the Twin Fairies, their family history is intertwined with Mothra’s. APEX or Monarch may have searched for them in New York City around this time. This could have been one of many steps in the long journey to finding the Mothra egg in 2009.
Alternatively, it may be that there’s another Mothra egg out there in the Monsterverse. While that does admittedly seem unlikely to be the case, that’s within the realm of possibility, given that there have been at least two active at one time.
While one egg sat inside a temple in China for thousands of years ago, another remained dormant deep down inside the Monsterverse’s Hollow Earth world, as confirmed by The New Empire. So theoretically, one could have been found and brought to New York City. But if that were true, it stands to reason it would have emerged by this point in the Monsterverse timeline.
The Mothra reference in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 may never go beyond the Easter egg, but it’s possible that as the show dives deeper into APEX’s activities, it will be expanded on in a future episode of the Apple TV series.
