A resolution proposed by Ghana at the United Nations on Wednesday to recognise transatlantic slavery as the ‘gravest crime against humanity’ and calling for reparations has been adopted. The resolution was proposed by Ghana’s president, John Dramani Mahama. The UN secretary general António Guterres welcomed the designation. The vote in the 193-member body was 123–3, with 52 abstentions. Argentina, Israel and the United States were the three to vote against the resolution.
