Metso has secured a contract from Southern Peru Copper Corporation to provide copper refining technology for the Tia Maria project located in Cocachacra, Province of Islay, Peru.
This agreement, valued at €100m ($115.06m), involves the supply of Solvent Extraction and Electrowinning (SX-EW) technology.
The new facility will have a production capacity of 120,000t of high-purity (LME grade A) copper cathodes annually.
The order has been recorded in the Minerals segment for the first quarter (Q1) of 2026.
Metso will deliver VSF solvent extraction and electrowinning facilities, featuring Dual Media Filters, a robotic cathode stripping machine, and an acid mist capture system designed to minimise environmental impact.
The company, having completed basic engineering for the initiative, will also provide site advisory services and start-up spare parts.
Its technologies offer an integrated solution for producing copper cathodes efficiently.
The use of VSF solvent extraction and electrowinning ensures sustainable operations with reduced lifetime costs and reliable performance.
Since the 1990s, Metso has supplied over 30 solvent extraction plants and 20 electrowinning plants to copper industry clients globally.
Metso South America president Eduardo Nilo said: “We are excited to continue working with the Tia Maria team on this important project catering for the increasing demand of copper.
“Our highly experienced teams will assist in this project, and comprehensive support will be provided through our local service network.”
Earlier this month, Metso secured orders to provide crushing and grinding equipment for the Expanded Phase 2 (EP2) development at Artemis Gold’s Blackwater Mine in central British Columbia, Canada.
The orders are valued at €39m ($45.25m), with approximately €16m reflected in the Minerals segment orders for the latter half of 2025, and €23m in the first quarter of 2026.
