Nate, Cassie, and Maddy’s Twisted Reunion

If the first trailer for “Euphoria” Season 3 suggested creator Sam Levinson was building his characters a cinematic bridge out of high school, the second makes it clear he’s already pushed them off that ledge.

The latest look at HBO’s divisive Emmy-winning series trades in dramatic ambiguity for a sharper, more dangerous vision that leans into old-Hollywood grandeur and dusty American Western iconography. Where the first promo felt “evil,” per IndieWire’s Kate Erbland, this one appears amoral, vicious, and wild.

We see flashes of Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) getting married — their ceremony staged in lush, hyper-romantic roses that recall Cassie’s Botticelli-inspired fantasies from Season 2. That soft-focus quickly curdles when Maddy (Alexa Demie), whose friendship with Cassie ended years ago, returns to the picture. The women’s reunion over [checks notes] OnlyFans content is peaceful enough, but the trio’s tense reacquainting is punctuated by a home invasion that echoes their toxic past.

Elsewhere, Rue (Zendaya) is in worse shape than ever. The trailer shows everyone’s favorite glittery screwup being interrogated by police about a possible trip to Mexico and, in one particularly gnarly scene, swallowing drug balloons in a grim, SoCal riff on “Cool Hand Luke.” Even her support system is compromised as Colman Domingo’s Ali speaks briefly, only to be brutally beaten seconds later.

The second trailer suggests Rue’s chaos and its consequences have spread further than ever before. But there are glimmers of hope beyond the carnage, too. Lexie (Maude Apatow) is spotted working on a Hollywood backlot, teeing up more direct commentary from Levinson on the state of the entertainment industry. (No doubt, he’ll have plenty to say after that chilly reception to “The Idol.”) And for all her suffering in Seasons 1 and 2, Jules (Hunter Schafer) is a model who, at least, seems happier.

That said, a fleeting shot of comedian Darrell Britt-Gibson wielding a bone saw over a blood-soaked shower signals a tonal shift that edges closer to “Breaking Bad” than anything “Euphoria” has attempted before. And while the rules of high school may be long gone, the stakes for this flashpoint cultural sensation have never been higher. The promo also features the late Eric Dane and Chloe Cherry, with more appearances from Dominic Fike, Nika King, Alanna Ubach, Sophia Rose Wilson, Melvin Bonez Estes, Daeg Faerch, Paula Marshall, Zak Steiner, and Marsha Gambles expected in Season 3.

From HBO Max, “Euphoria” Season 3 premieres on Sunday, April 12. Watch the trailer below.
