The sheriff who took the phone call that led to Charlie Kirk’s suspected shooter turning himself in has resigned and announced his retirement.
Sheriff Nate Brooksby made the announcement on Friday following undisclosed complaints to Utah’s Washington County “from individuals who were concerned with operations at the sheriff’s office,” deputy county attorney Courtney Sinagra told The Salt Lake Tribune.
Sinagra said that Brooksby resigned as a consequence of the complaints, but disagreed with them. “After that decision… the complainant asked the matter not be pursued further, and we’re respecting their request,” she said.
Kirk, a conservative activist, was fatally shot while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in September, 2025. Tyler Robinson later surrendered to police, and prosecutors have charged him with aggravated murder in the shooting.
