Top Iranian officials denied President Trump’s claim that the regime begged for a cease-fire deal on Wednesday, insisting that Tehran is committed to winning the war.
A spokesperson for the office of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian rejected Trump’s post on Truth Social claiming that Tehran had reached out to Washington for a peace deal.
“The stance of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the defense of the homeland against the onslaught of the forces of evil and the conditions for ending the imposed war has undergone no change, and there is no regard whatsoever for the delusions and lies of the criminal aggressors,” Seyyed Mehdi Tabatabaei wrote on X.
“The Iranian nation, resolute, steadfast, and united, defends the essence of its homeland. #unity is the key to our victory,” he added.
Esmail Baghaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, echoed the denial and slammed Trump’s announcement as “false and baseless,” according to state media.
Iran is also committed to keeping full control of the Strait of Hormuz, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in its own statement.
“This strait will not be opened to the enemies of this nation through the ridiculous spectacle by the president of the United States,” The IRGC said.
The statements from Iran come after Trump said he had received a request for a cease-fire from Iran, one that he was willing to consider if the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.
“Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!” he threatened.
Trump did not say who the “new regime president” that he was speaking to was.
It has previously been reported that Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf is leading the talks with mediators, but he has previously mocked Trump over past claims that a cease-fire deal was progressing.
The president’s announcement came before the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq opened for trading. Over recent weeks, Trump has made several significant announcements about progress in Iran before markets opened.
As mediators in the Middle East work to set up direct talks between Tehran and Washington, Iran’s leadership has maintained that the war will not end until they receive reparations from the US and Israel.
Iran’s parliament has also passed legislation that would see the Islamic republic permanently control the Strait of Hormuz and charge tolls for ships to pass through the key trade route for as much as $2 million.
