The Detroit Tigers won the first two games of their series with the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend and entered Sunday’s action with a 4-4 record, while sitting just one game back of the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. Future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander was set to start the series finale on Sunday night against St. Louis.
However, the Tigers were forced to alter their plans for the finale. Verlander was ultimately unable to make his first home start in Detroit since 2017.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, they may be without Verlander for a little while. Bob Nightengale of USA Today provided the latest update on Saturday.
“Detroit Tigers great Justin Verlander, who was scheduled to make his first start Sunday night at Comerica Park since 2017, is now going on the 15-day IL with left hip inflammation,” Nightengale posted on X.

Verlander made his first start with Detroit on March 30 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In that start, the 43-year-old right-hander allowed five runs over 3 2/3 innings pitched.
The future Hall of Famer has a 12.27 ERA after his first start. It is unclear how long Verlander will be out, but Detroit will have to manage without him for at least 15 days.
In his place, the Tigers named 25-year-old right-hander Keider Montero as their starter for the series finale against St. Louis.
Verlander spent the 2025 season with the San Francisco Giants, posting a 3.85 ERA in 29 starts. Detroit brought him back on a one-year deal late in the offseason.
