Nick Offerman’s Sonic 4 Role Can Finally Bring A Beloved Game Character To The Big Screen

Nick Offerman has had plenty of memorable comedic roles over the course of his career. His upcoming performance in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 may be no different, especially since he’d be perfect for bringing one core game character to the big screen. Sonic the Hedgehog 4‘s story follows Sonic and newcomer Amy Rose as they battle the villainous Metal Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s post-credits scene revealed Metal Sonic as the next big threat, with Amy arriving just in time to save Sonic from an army of robots that look just like him. The movie appears to be pulling elements from Sonic CD, while also including Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow. Jim Carrey has also been confirmed to return as Dr. Robotnik.

Multiple other cast members have also been revealed, including Ben Kingsley and Offerman. While theories abound regarding Kingsley’s possible role as Metal Sonic, Offerman doesn’t seem to fit the bill for the villain. Instead, it seems like he’s going to be playing a completely new character who hasn’t appeared in the Sonic movies yet.

However, given his comedic background, there appears to be one character he’d play the best: Big the Cat. Introduced in Sonic Adventure, Big is a large cat who enjoys fishing with his pet frog, Froggy. Although he was introduced after Sonic CD in the games, his inclusion would still be perfect for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, especially because of Offerman’s involvement.

Why Nick Offerman Would Be Sonic’s Perfect Big The Cat

Big the Cat in Sonic Prime

Big the Cat is often shown to be a laid-back, easygoing fisherman who, despite not being very intelligent, has a heart of gold. He also possesses unnatural strength, making him a strong hero who occasionally helps out Sonic and his friends. His attachment to Froggy is a major part of Sonic Adventure, where he searches for him amid Eggman and Chaos’ plans.

Offerman’s best TV and movie roles come from various genres, but he’s proven himself a talented comedian with some of his more memorable ones. This includes his award-winning portrayal as Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation, alongside an award-nominated role as conspiracy theory lawyer Karl Weathers in Fargo season 2. His talent makes him versatile enough to portray Big.

It would also make sense for him to show up as Big because the movie’s writers have been wanting to introduce him for quite some time. Pat Casey and Josh Miller previously confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would have featured a skeleton in Siberia reminiscent of Big, something that was later cut to avoid confusion.

However, Offerman’s inclusion and comedy background means Sonic the Hedgehog 4‘s story is the perfect chance to formally introduce Big onscreen. The actor’s gruff voice coupled with his comedian roots would be perfect for Big the Cat, adding a new dynamic to the group that will be a major surprise for viewers of the movie.

How Big The Cat Could Perfectly Fit Into Sonic 4

Big the Cat may not directly go up against Sonic the Hedgehog‘s next big villain, but he would still be a perfect addition to the movie franchise in its fourth installment. He could add a new dynamic of comedic relief to the team’s journey, one that meshes together with Sonic’s wordplay and Knuckles’ gullible yet confident personality.

But comedy relief is just one role Big could play in the fourth movie. Depending on how the story plays out, he could also be used to set up elements from Sonic Adventure to be used in a future film, such as being the conduit to introduce Chaos. While this in particular is unclear for now, it’s something that could further justify his involvement in the movie.

Although there’s no guarantee Offerman is playing Big in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, it would be a fitting casting choice which could greatly add to the movie without fully taking focus away from Amy and Metal Sonic’s introductions. If he does show up, then it can help further expand the cast with even more recognizable game characters.
