هدد رئيس هيئة الاتصالات الفيدرالية الأمريكية بريندان كار جهات البث التلفزيوني في الولايات المتحدة بسحب تراخيصها إذا لم «تصحح مسارها» في تغطية الحرب مع إيران، وذلك بعد شكوى مباشرة من الرئيس دونالد ترمب بشأن ما وصفه بـ«التغطية السلبية والمضللة» للنزاع.
وكتب كار، في منشور على منصة «إكس» أن «المحطات التي تبث أكاذيب وتشويهات إخبارية لديها فرصة الآن لتصحيح المسار قبل موعد تجديد التراخيص»، مضيفا أن «القانون واضح: يجب على المذيعين العمل لصالح المصلحة العامة، وإلا سيفقدون تراخيصهم».
وشدد كار على أن تغيير المسار في مصلحتهم التجارية أيضاً، مشيرا إلى أنه «انخفضت ثقة الجمهور في الإعلام التقليدي إلى 9% فقط، وهي كارثة في التقييمات».
جاء التحذير بعد ساعات قليلة من تصريحات الرئيس ترمب التي انتقد فيها تغطية الشبكات الإخبارية للحرب مع إيران، معتبراً أنها «سلبية بنسبة 97%» وتركز على «الخسائر بدلاً من الانتصارات»، وألمح إلى أن «بريندان كار سيتعامل مع الأمر»، مشيراً إلى أن التراخيص تُمنح مقابل التزام بالمصلحة العامة.
وأكد كار أن الأمريكيين دفعوا مليارات الدولارات عبر تخصيص الموجات الهوائية مجاناً للمذيعين، مشدداً على ضرورة إعادة الثقة إلى الإعلام بعد فوز مرشح سياسي بأغلبية ساحقة رغم الأكاذيب والتشويهات، في إشارة ضمنية إلى انتخابات 2024.
أثار التصريح انتقادات حادة من معارضي الإدارة، حيث وصف النائب الديمقراطي تيد ليو التهديد بأنه «فاشي»، محذراً من أن أي تنفيذ سيؤدي إلى دعاوى قضائية كبرى وكشف تواصل محتمل بين الـFCC والإدارة.
كما اعتبر مراقبون أن الخطوة تمثل تصعيداً في استخدام الـFCC للضغط على الإعلام، خصوصا بعد فتح تحقيقات سابقة في «تشويه أخبار» ضد شبكات مثل CBS وABC.
ومنذ تولي كار رئاسة هيئة الاتصالات الفيدرالية الأمريكية في يناير 2025، اتخذ مواقف عدائية تجاه الإعلام التقليدي، بما في ذلك إعادة فتح تحقيقات «تشويه أخبار» ضد CBS بسبب مقابلة كامالا هاريس 2024، وتهديدات سابقة ضد ABC بسبب برنامج جيمي كيميل، وتحقيقات في «The View» بتهمة انتهاك قاعدة «الوقت المتساوي».
Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), threatened television broadcasters in the United States with the revocation of their licenses if they do not “correct their course” in covering the war with Iran, following a direct complaint from President Donald Trump regarding what he described as “negative and misleading coverage” of the conflict.
Carr wrote in a post on the platform “X” that “stations that broadcast lies and news distortions now have a chance to correct their course before the license renewal deadline,” adding that “the law is clear: broadcasters must operate in the public interest, or they will lose their licenses.”
Carr emphasized that changing course is also in their commercial interest, noting that “public trust in traditional media has dropped to just 9%, which is a disaster in ratings.”
The warning came just hours after President Trump criticized the news networks’ coverage of the war with Iran, considering it “97% negative” and focusing on “losses instead of victories,” hinting that “Brendan Carr will handle the matter,” and pointing out that licenses are granted in exchange for a commitment to the public interest.
Carr confirmed that Americans have paid billions of dollars by allocating airwaves for free to broadcasters, stressing the need to restore trust in the media after a political candidate won by a landslide despite lies and distortions, implicitly referring to the 2024 elections.
The statement drew sharp criticism from administration opponents, with Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu describing the threat as “fascist,” warning that any enforcement would lead to major lawsuits and reveal potential communication between the FCC and the administration.
Observers also considered the move a escalation in the FCC’s use of pressure on the media, especially after previous investigations into “news distortion” against networks like CBS and ABC.
Since Carr took over as chairman of the FCC in January 2025, he has taken hostile positions toward traditional media, including reopening investigations into “news distortion” against CBS due to the Kamala Harris 2024 interview, previous threats against ABC over the Jimmy Kimmel program, and investigations into “The View” for violating the “equal time” rule.
