When anyone thinks of a Netflix subscription, one thing comes to mind—movies and TV. Whether it’s Oscar-winning films or television, there’s so much entertainment. A few of those Netflix shows have perfect runs, according to some fans. And one that everyone always talks about is Stranger Things, created by the famous Duffer Brothers, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer.
The series, which concluded in January 2026 after a nearly ten-year run, has been a landmark for the creators. With any creative in Hollywood, they’re moving on to their next big project. That happens to be the new series, Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, and boy, is it so different from Stranger Things.
What is the new show about?
When marriage can be terrifying
With a title like Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, I’m sure you’re wondering what it’s about. Well, if your first instinct is that it’s something horrible, you would be right. Mix that in with the supposedly happiest day of your life, and things turn a little messy quickly.
The premise of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen follows a couple, Rachel and Nicky, who are engaged and set to marry, and who decide to skip the chaos of planning a big wedding and settle on a small one. But as time goes on, Rachel begins to realize that marrying Nicky might lead to something “far more sinister” than just promising to spend their lifetimes together (according to Netflix via Tudum).
The main crux of the story takes place in the woods, but things turn scarier and scarier as time goes on.

With any new show on Netflix, there are a decent number of stars. Playing the lead couple are Camila Marrone and Adam DiMarco, who have appeared in previous shows such as Daisy Jones & the Six and The Order.
Supporting them are actors such as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ted Levine, Jeff Wilbusch, Karal Crome, and Gus Birney.
How is it different from Stranger Things?
From one genre to the next
I feel like the first thing I need to point out about how this is different from Stranger Things is that the Duffer Brothers didn’t create Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. They are, instead, the series’ executive producers. Haley Z. Boston created the show. Now, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have a lot of creative control. The producers help fund the project and are often responsible for the overall creative direction. So you know they are going to put a lot of their flair into it.
Even so, the biggest difference between Stranger Things and this new project from the Duffer Brothers is that this one is a horror miniseries, through and through.
Stranger Things, at first, wasn’t that terrifying or had terrifying imagery. I mean, sure, the first season certainly had its moments—like the first time we saw the Demogorgon or watching Eleven break a kid’s arm with her mind. But in comparison to later seasons, it was very light.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a horror miniseries, so I suggest keeping the kids away from it. In fact, Netflix (via Tudum) described the series’ visuals as a cross between Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby, so do with that what you will.
Another big difference is that the cast is small. While Stranger Things did have a huge ensemble cast full of A-list stars by the end of the series (thanks to the show making them famous), even the first season featured big names like Winona Ryder and David Harbour. Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is much smaller, which means it’ll be a much more intimate (and scary) story.
This new show is not 1980s nostalgia. Like, at all. Obviously, the Duffer Brothers have done other things besides projects rooted in bright colors, pop music, and more from the 1980s, but that is what they are known for. Stranger Things really was their breakthrough. However, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a contemporary tale.

Even though this new show is interesting, I’m sure there are fans of Stranger Things who might not want to watch this full-on horror series and want more from the world of Hawkins.
To answer your question, yes, there are other Stranger Things-related projects in the works. The biggest one, confirmed by Netflix, is Tales from ‘85, an animated spinoff of the series set between seasons 2 and 3. The cast is entirely voiced by new actors and will be released on April 23, 2026.
However, according to Deadline, a live-action spin-off is also in the works at Netflix, and the Duffer Brothers are moving forward with it. It would be set in the universe but tell a new tale with new characters.
Aside from that, there’s the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a prequel to the series, which is currently on Broadway.
