Newark Liberty International Airport has reopened with major delays after an emergency aboard a Jet Blue flight caused a full ground stop on Wednesday.

The Miami-bound flight took off from Newark at around 5.45pm but was forced to immediately turn around after experiencing engine failure, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

Smoke was reported in the cockpit while passengers had to be evacuated with slides.

The ground stop at the busy airport has since been lifted but the average flight delay is now 90 minutes, down from a peak of two hours.
