Keanu Reeves is facing the music in his new Apple TV movie Outcome.
Apple TV’s Outcome shows a damaged Hollywood star, Reef Hawk (played by Reeves), who tries to stay sober and carefully rebuild his life. All goes well until a mysterious blackmail video appears, threatening to sabotage everything he’s worked for. The comedy thriller is directed and written by Jonah Hill, who also has a role alongside other well-known stars such as Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, David Spade, Kaia Gerber, and Laverne Cox.
Despite having such a well-established list of stars attached, Hill’s new thriller is anything but thrilling, according to its reviews. Outcome has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes to an abysmal 25% rating based on 24 reviews. Critics are stating that the dark comedy comes across as a “whiny, woe-is-me plea” and that “Jonah Hill himself gets in the way of his own ideas and story.” However, some have come out in support of Reeves, stating that he’s “certainly at his best in this role.”
ScreenRant‘s Alex Harrison stated that the comedy is “An awkward jumble of tones, Outcome shoots for greatness and misses, despite having sections that show us the true potential of this material.” Using Reeves as a character plagued by scandal seems wrong, given that the actor is so far removed from real-world drama and scandal.
This isn’t Hill’s first foray into directing, as he has directed a few music videos, as well as the 2018 movie Mid90s, which has an impressive 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and also the Netflix documentary Stutz, which serves as one of Hill’s best Rotten Tomatoes scores at a near-perfect 96%. Stutz, released in 2022, shows Hill and his therapist, Phil Stutz, who is one of the world’s leading psychiatrists, as they have candid discussions surrounding mental health.
When speaking to reporters, Hill spoke about how the film serves as “a metaphor for what we all go through living on social media. Social media has made us obsessed with what people we don’t know think of us, instead of caring about what the people who know us best think of us.”
Reeves has a busy schedule lined up, including appearing in Pixar’s new addition to one of its most famous franchises, titled Toy Story 5, as Duke Caboom. The actor will also appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Shiver, BRZRKR, and the long-awaited return as Constantine in Constantine 2.
Outcome is available to stream on Apple TV from April 10.
