OG Harry Potter Actor’s Franchise Return In New Recast Role Officially Revealed [Exclusive]

An actor from the original Harry Potter movies returns to the franchise in a recast role.

The cast of HBO’s Harry Potter series features an almost entirely new group of actors, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. So far, the only returning actor from the movies is Warwick Davis reprising the part of Professor Filius Flitwick. This is not the franchise’s only new adaptation, though, with Audible releasing new full-cast audio editions of the books.

Now, ScreenRant presents an exclusive clip of Professor Horace Slughorn voiced by Bill Nighy in the full-cast audio edition of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Nighy was in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 movie as the new Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, while Jim Broadbent played Slughorn in the Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows: Part 2 films. Listen to the clip of Nighy voicing Slughorn below:

In addition to featuring Nighy as Slughorn, the clip that begins during a Potions class includes narration by Cush Jumbo OBE, Jaxon Knopf as Harry, Rhys Mulligan as Ron, and Nina Barker-Francis as Hermione. HBO’s Hermione actor, Stanton, voiced her in the first three full-cast audio editions, alongside Frankie Treadway as Harry and Max Lester as Ron. Knopf, Mulligan, and Barker-Francis have been voicing the trio since Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and will continue in these roles for the rest of the series.

The Audible adaptations have been rolled out across a seven-month period, beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone on November 4, 2025, and culminating with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on May 12, 2026. Slughorn is most prominent in Half-Blood Prince, but since he does appear during the later parts of Deathly Hallows and during the Battle of Hogwarts, Nighy will be voicing the character in the final installment as well.

Other characters from the Harry Potter books and the actors who voice them in Half-Blood Prince include Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed as Professor Severus Snape, Maximus Evans as Draco Malfoy, Michelle Gomez as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Mark Addy as Professor Rubeus Hagrid, Ruth Wilson as Bellatrix Lestrange, Simon Pegg as Arthur Weasley, Iwan Rheon as Remus Lupin, Ambika Mod as Nymphadora Tonks, and Gemma Whelan as Professor Pomona Sprout.

After the last novels in Audible’s adaptations are released, it will not be long until the franchise returns with another major debut, as HBO’s Harry Potter show is confirmed to premiere on December 25 on HBO Max. The first season consists of eight episodes that are based on the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Each of the remaining books will also receive their own seasons, although HBO executive Casey Bloys has shared that they won’t be released annually due to the show’s massive scale.

As fans wait for the Harry Potter show to come out, they can listen to Stanton as Hermione in Audible’s first three full-cast audio editions and experience Nighy as Slughorn in Half-Blood Prince.

Audible’s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will release on April 14, 2026.
