Elle Fanning leads a cast that gives new meaning to the word “dynamic” in Apple TV’s uproarious new miniseries, Margo’s Got Money Troubles. Based on Rufi Thorpe’s bestselling 2024 novel of the same name, Fanning’s titular protagonist is a bright college student with dreams of becoming a writer whose life takes a hard left turn when an affair with her English professor finds her very pregnant and very broke.
Determined to have the baby and raise him on her terms, Margo looks for creative ways to make money, and ends up creating an OnlyFans account to pay the bills. This raises the eyebrows of her former Hooters waitress mother and newly sober ex-wrestler father, who are still determined to support Margo in any way they can.
Margo’s Got Money Troubles is a dramedy in every sense of the word, a notoriously tricky genre to get right. The show leans into the hilarity that comes with the foibles of caring for a newborn and working an unconventional job without ever becoming too broad. At the same time, Margo’s Got Money Troubles covers intensely serious subject matter, from fractured families to single motherhood with no shortage of people lining up to tell Margo she’s doing everything wrong.
Striking this balance requires talented actors at the top of their game, and Margo’s Got Money Troubles nails this with its cast. From Michelle Pfeiffer and Nick Offerman as Margo’s messy but loving parents to Thaddea Graham as her eccentric and fiercely loyal roommate to the Emmy-worthy Elle Fanning herself, this Apple TV show has one of the best TV casts in recent memory.
